How to unwind and beat stress at workplace

Do you feel the weekend passes too soon? Does a new workweek leave you feeling sluggish and stressed? If so, you are likely experiencing more than just “Monday blues”. You are not alone–many people feel overwhelmed and exhausted by job demands.

A growing number of people worldwide face chronic stress, burnout, and anxiety. The 2024 Gallup report––that examined the role of work in employee mental health and wellbeing––stated that about 44 per cent of employees say they experienced a “lot of stress” at work.

A report by Northwestern National Life said 40% of workers find their jobs “very or extremely stressful,” in addition to, 25% of employees viewing their jobs as their primary stressor.

These findings highlight the need for holistic solutions to address the mental health challenges faced by young professionals in high-pressure environments. If mental health is neglected, chronic stress and burnout become bigger threats. Effective stress management strategies become crucial for protecting our overall well-being.

Go bananas: China’s quirky anti-stress technique

In the face of mounting workplace stress, young professionals in China have discovered a novel solution: watching bananas ripen right at their desks. This is described in Mandarin as “ting zhi jiao lu,” which closely translates to “stop anxiety”.

Employees buy green bananas and place them in vases filled with water. In over a week, the bananas ripen, changing its colour from lush green to golden yellow. Focusing on this has become a popular stress-relief trend, with employees finding the activity a fun and engaging distraction from the pressures of their work.

Chai break: The desi way to take a chill-pill

AON and Teleus Health’s Asia Mental Health Index report finds that the mental health of Asia’s working population is under strain, with about 43 per cent of Indian corporate employees suffering from anxiety and depression due to work-related stress.

In Indian workplaces, a trend for navigating stress is the famous “chai” (tea) break, unlike the more common coffee breaks seen in other parts of the world.

“An emotion for most Indians—chai is the perfect office pick-me-up to steep away the workplace stress. A chai break clears my head, helps me unwind, and gets me back on track. It’s a quick recharge that keeps me fueled through the day, while also strengthening bonds with colleagues over these shared moments,” says Arshit Shane, Social Media Manager, at ABC World Media.

Engaging in casual conversations with colleagues can provide a much-needed mental break from the daily grind, according to Neelanjana Mazumdar, vice president of content, Advantage Club. ”

Stepping away from my desk, walking up to my colleagues, and having a good chat about almost anything but work while having delicious food, helps in refreshing my mind,” said Mazumdar.

Rohit Taneja, an associate at CG Infinity, suggested, “Playing UNO in the office can be a great way to relieve tension and refresh the mind.”

Kashish Chadha, working with Paralegal India Law LLP, is of the opinion that one can “just head out for a casual stroll with colleagues,” and this can help employees stay energised for the rest of the day.

The way forward: Harness the power of short-breaks to de-stress

Countless studies suggest taking regular breaks through the workday to de-stress. Piyali Maity, clinical director of counselling operations at 1to1help, said, “stepping away from work, even for a few minutes, can boost focus and productivity, allowing the brain to reset, reducing mental fatigue, and improving cognitive performance as they return to their tasks with a fresh perspective.”

Maria Rajesh, GCHRO, Embassy Group, concurs. “Every Monday, we organise quick desk exercises across all locations, encouraging employees to take short breaks for physical activity and mental refreshment and reduce stress, which enables us to foster a sense of community and support among employees.”

She also said that it enhances social interaction and reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness, boosting teamwork and creating a more supportive work environment.

With such effective strategies, stress at work can be managed to an extent. Take a deep breath, grab a chai (or coffee!), and conquer your workday!
