Bhagyashree believes that youthful skin is possible at any age if you care for it the right way. According to the actor and nutritionist, who often shares skincare hacks and home remedies on Instagram, one need not spend a lot of time and effort on their skin; all one needs are a few ingredients to makeit feel alive again. As such, Bhagyashree shared the recipe for a face mask that she often uses to get a glow on her skin. “I have a face mask that feels like magic on my skin. It not only moisturizes and hydrates but is also a collagen booster and helps in the reduction of pigmentation and acne. Made from aloe vera, saffron, oats, rose water, and vitamin E…this is just what your skin needs,” she said.

Does this mask work? Here’s what dermats had to say.

Let’s understand the pros and cons of each ingredient

Saffron is beneficial in treating skin diseases because of its antioxidant, anti-microbial, depigmenting, and repairing properties. “Therefore, it is used for formulating various lotions, creams, and cosmetics emulsions, namely sunscreens, moisturisers, and anti-spot and anti-ageing products,” said Dr Vichitra Sharma, consultant, dermatology, Amrita Hospital Faridabad.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is well-regarded for its soothing, moisturising, and healing properties. “It can help calm irritated skin, reduce inflammation, and hydrate the skin deeply,” said Dr Sharma.

Considerations: Generally safe for most skin types, but some may be allergic. Patch testing is recommended, added Dr Sharma.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from free radical damage, promotes skin healing, and keeps the skin moisturized. It can also improve skin texture and tone. “Vitamin E oil can be heavy and may clog pores for people with oily or acne-prone skin. Using it in moderate amounts is advisable,” said Dr Sharma.

Oats

Oats have anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, making them great for sensitive or irritated skin. They can also help to gently exfoliate and cleanse the skin. “Patch test is recommended,” said Dr Sharma.

Rose water

Rose water is known for its hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties. It can help balance the skin’s pH, reduce redness, and refresh the skin. “Usually safe for most skin types but may cause irritation in extremely sensitive skin,” said Dr Sharma.

Benefits

Combining these ingredients can potentially create a cream that
*Moisturises and hydrates the skin.
*Provides antioxidant protection.
*Soothes and calms irritated skin.
*Offers mild exfoliation and cleansing.

Here’s what to keep in mind

Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic cautioned that when making DIY face cream or face mask it becomes important to understand the benefits and side effects of each ingredient before applying it on your skin. “Aloe Vera is no doubt soothing and moisturising to your skin but can cause allergies and itching when applied on the face. Overuse of saffron and rose water in face cream can make your skin dry and sensitive,” said Dr Chause.

Patch test: Before applying any new cream, especially those with multiple active ingredients, it’s crucial to do a patch test to rule out any allergic reactions, cautioned Dr Sharma.

Skin type consideration: Tailor the product usage according to your skin type. Dr Sharma gave an example suggesting that those with oily skin might find vitamin E oil too heavy, while those with sensitive skin should be cautious with saffron and rose water.

Concentration and quality: Ensure the ingredients are of high quality and used in appropriate concentrations to be effective and safe.

Professional consultation: For personalied advice, especially if you have specific skin concerns or conditions, consulting with a dermatologist is recommended, added Dr Sharma.
