Drinking water is one of the most underrated yet essential things for good health. And it is also something Sonakshi Sinha swears by.

“The first thing I do after waking up is to have a litre of water. Then there is a conscious effort to keep sipping on water throughout the day. That is my clean start,” the Heeramandi actor told Shilpa Shetty Kundra in an interview in 2022.

Drinking enough water is vital for numerous bodily functions, including metabolism and appetite regulation. But do experts advise drinking 1 litre of water first thing in the morning?

Soumita Biswas, chief nutritionist, Aster RV Hospital, Bengaluru said that drinking half or one litre of water in the morning can positively and negatively effect on health, depending on individual circumstances.

According to Biswas, positive effects include:

– Boosts metabolism and aids weight loss
– Flushes out toxins and cleanses the body
– Hydrates the body after a night of sleep
– Improves digestion and reduces bloating

However, people are advised to avoid consuming too much water in one go, especially before a meal like breakfast. Negative effects of having too much water in the morning can range from overload on the kidneys, to increased urination, stated Biswas. Some other effects include:

– Frequent urination, potentially disruptive
– Water intoxication (hyponatremia) in extreme cases
– Stomach discomfort or nausea in some individuals

Things to note

“It is essential to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions,” stressed Biswas.

A balanced approach to hydration, combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, is recommended for sustainable weight loss and overall well-being.

Remember to listen to your body and adjust your water intake based on your individual needs, activity levels, and climate conditions. It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day and make drinking water a regular part of your routine for overall well-being.
