What are the health challenges athletes will be facing during Paris Olympics as extreme heat hits the city?

The 2024 Paris Olympics promise to be a landmark event, but a scorching reality threatens to steal the spotlight – extreme heat. With Europe grappling with record-breaking temperatures, athlete health and peak performance are at significant risk.

For athletes, peak performance hinges on efficient thermoregulation – the body’s ability to maintain a healthy core temperature. However, extreme heat throws a wrench into this system. Dr Nasiruddin G, Consultant-Internal Medicine at Fortis Hospital, explained the consequences:

Overheating Onslaught: Intense heat disrupts the body’s cooling mechanisms, leading to overheating, muscle cramps, dizziness, and even the life-threatening condition – heatstroke. Exhaustion sets in faster, hindering athletic performance significantly.

Dehydration and Decline: During a heatwave, the body goes into overdrive to cool down. Sweating increases dramatically, but excessive fluid loss leads to dehydration. Blood flow diverts from muscles to the skin, reducing strength and endurance.

Beyond physical strain

The mental toll of competing in extreme heat at the Paris Olympics shouldn’t be underestimated. Heat stress can lead to irritability, difficulty concentrating, and even impair decision-making. For athletes who have dedicated years of training, the emotional strain of not performing at their best can be immense.

Certain athletes face a heightened risk in extreme heat. Endurance athletes like marathon runners and cyclists who compete outdoors for extended periods are particularly susceptible. According to Dr Rakesh Gupta, Senior Consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, due to their underlying conditions, paralympic athletes may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, as their ability to regulate body temperature might be compromised. A study at the 2020 Tokyo Games revealed that over 21% of Paralympic athletes experienced heat stress symptoms, he added.

Ultimately, striking a balance between athletic excellence and safeguarding athlete well-being is paramount. (file)

Combating the heatwave

Fortunately, strategies exist to mitigate the risks of extreme heat at the Paris Olympics, said Dr Nasiruddin:

Hydration is Key: Athletes need to prioritize adequate hydration with water and electrolyte-rich fluids throughout the day, even before and after training or competition.

Cooling Techniques Matter: Pre-cooling with cold showers and wearing lightweight, breathable clothing are crucial measures.

Listen to Your Body: Athletes must be vigilant. They should adjust training intensity, seek shade during breaks, and not hesitate to withdraw from competition if feeling unwell. Acclimatization training beforehand can also significantly improve heat tolerance.

The Paris Olympics have an opportunity to set a new standard for prioritising athlete safety in extreme weather conditions. Ultimately, striking a balance between athletic excellence and safeguarding athlete well-being is paramount.
