You may have switched off all gadgets and lights for the day only to realise that your brain is still active and consumed by many thoughts — something that can prevent you from sleeping on time and also affect the quality of sleep. If you are nodding in affirmation, we may have some help.

According to Jolie Slovis, a somatic anxiety coach, when your brain is lit up with lots of thoughts, try the butterfly tapping technique. “Clasp your thumbs together and place your palms on the chest to liken a butterfly. Start by alternative tapping on the left and right-hand side of the chest. In a minute or two, your body should start to calm down. This helps you fall asleep faster,” Slovis mentioned in an Instagram post.

To verify this, we turned to Dr Imraan Khan (PT), consultant head physiotherapist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road who explained that the tapping technique is used as a remedy for better sleep during nighttime but may not work for all.

“Being too stressed can result in difficulty sleeping, poor sleep schedule, poor quality sleep, and even insomnia in some cases. In this technique, it’s all about leaning into the rhythmic vibrations that shift your body into relaxation mode,” said Dr Khan.

This hack may work for some, but not all. “People with ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or similar problems might find it difficult to sleep with the butterfly tapping hack as constant hand movements can create a distraction, resulting in delayed sleeping than usual,” explained Dr Khan.

According to him, individuals can try certain lifestyle adjustments like creating a sleep schedule that focuses on at least 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep.

“There is no harm in trying this technique but only along with addressing the root cause of stress. Indulging in stress-relief activities like listening to your favourite music before sleeping to relax your body can also help. Creating a safer, and relaxing environment can help you calm down and enhance your sleep quality,” said Dr Khan.
