Not only is Rakul Preet Singh extremely particular about her diet, but she also ensures her parents follow suit. As such, when her mother Rini Singh developed acidity issues, the actor put a complete ban on her tea consumption. “It’s great for her. She keeps saying that she feels acidic. So, I said, leave chai. Don’t cut down. Leave. If it is poison for your body, then you need to leave it for a bit and then restart it. I am like, aap log detox karo,” Rakul said in a conversation with Zoom.

Why does acidity occur?

According to Dr Nandini Sarwate, chief nutritional advisor, Utopian Drinks, acidity can occur due to a combination of factors, including:

Spicy and fatty foods
Caffeine and alcohol
Overeating
Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical activity can slow down digestion and increase the risk of acidity
Obesity
Smoking
Stress

Things to keep in mind

Tea must be avoided as the first thing in the morning, immediately after lunch or dinner, and as a replacement for meals. “Instead of having tea on an empty stomach, opt for a glass of water, fruit, yogurt, smoothie, or natural juice. Consuming tea on an empty stomach can lead to heartburn or indigestion,” said Dr Sarwate.

However, tea in limited quantities usually does not cause acidity, said Dr Sarwate. “Having two cups of tea a day is generally fine. However, if you have persistent acidity problems, it could be due to an underlying health issue or a sedentary lifestyle,” said Dr Sarwate.

So, should you stop drinking tea to tackle acidity?

“Simply cutting down on tea might help you see some changes but not resolve your problems entirely. It’s important to address potential root causes and consider lifestyle changes for better management of acidity,” added Dr Sarwate.

To address acidity-related issues, consider altering your lifestyle and establishing a healthier regimen. “Avoid consuming tea on an empty stomach. Additionally, reducing the number of tea cups consumed in a day and replacing them with fruits and smoothies can be beneficial,” mentioned Dr Sarwate.
