Who is Kat Torres, the Brazillian influencer jailed for trafficking and slavery?

Post At: Jul 15/2024 11:10PM

Kat Torres, a former Brazilian model living in the United States and known for her wellness influencer persona, faced a steep fall from grace. After the FBI investigated the disappearance of two women residing with her in 2022, Torres was sentenced to eight years in prison for human trafficking and slavery.

This wasn’t the only accusation against Torres. Several other women emerged, detailing their harrowing experiences of being trafficked and enslaved by her. They were initially drawn to Torres’ rags-to-riches story – a young woman escaping poverty in Brazil to become a social media influencer with connections to Hollywood celebrities.

“She kind of resembled hope for me,” BBC reported Anna, one of her 20 victims, as saying when she stumbled upon Torres’ Instagram page in 2017. “She seemed like she had overcome violence in her childhood, abuse, all these traumatic experiences,” Anna added.

Torres’ claims to fame extended beyond social media. She not only fueled rumours of a relationship with actor Leonardo DiCaprio, but also positioned herself as a spiritual guide with the ability to make predictions. These claims, coupled with her past appearances on Brazilian television, helped her build a loyal following.

“I worry about what he will think about me talking to you. We have a pact that nothing can ever be said about our relationship. In Europe it is different. People see us together in many places so they do not need to ask us about anything. He doesn’t like being photographed and barely goes out walking once people have realised it’s him,” Torres had said in an interview, explaining why she didn’t like talking about her “boyfriend DiCaprio.”

Despite the rumours surrounding her personal life, Torres remained tight-lipped about her connection to DiCaprio, citing a supposed pact to keep their romance private. However, a former roommate shed light on a potential turning point in Torres’ life – the use of hallucinogenic drugs. This revelation raised questions about whether these substances influenced Torres’ decision to reinvent herself as a life coach and hypnotist.

Leveraging this new persona, Torres launched a wellness website and subscription service, promising subscribers a path to achieving their dreams of wealth, love, and self-esteem. She offered a variety of resources, from self-help videos to one-on-one consultations for a hefty price tag, guaranteeing solutions to any problem. However, the reality for over 20 women who came forward painted a starkly different picture. They accused Torres of scamming or exploiting them, leaving them emotionally scarred. These victims are still undergoing therapy to recover from their experiences.
