Traditional cooking methods often entail multiple pots and pans to prepare different components of a meal, which can clutter the kitchen and make cleanup more time-consuming. Enter stack cooking.

According to fitness coach Pushpa Venkatesh, pressure cooking can lead to nutrient loss, overly soft texture, diminished flavours, and the risk of overcooking. “Consider stack cooking methods to retain their nutritional and culinary qualities,” said Venkatesh.

What’s stack cooking?

Stack cooking is a cooking method that involves preparing multiple dishes simultaneously by stacking them on top of each other in a single pot or steamer. This innovative technique is designed to streamline the cooking process, save time and energy, and optimise the utilisation of kitchen space,” said Sangeeta Tiwari, clinical nutritionist, Artemis Lite, NFC, New Delhi.

All the dishes are cooked in one pot or steamer, effectively minimising the amount of cookware needed and freeing up valuable kitchen space for other tasks. “Not only that, stack cooking also promotes healthier eating habits by allowing you to prepare a variety of dishes with minimal additional fats or oils,” said Tiwari.

By cooking multiple dishes at once in a single vessel, you can significantly reduce the overall cooking time required for preparing a complete meal.

Since the ingredients are cooked together, their flavours intermingle, enhancing the overall taste of the meal without the need for excessive seasonings or additives. “This method also helps to retain the nutrients in the food, ensuring that you and your family receive the maximum nutritional benefits from each meal,” said Tiwari.

In comparison to other types of cooking, stack cooking stands out for its ability to simplify and expedite the cooking process while maintaining the quality and flavour of the dishes. Tiwari shared that it offers a practical solution for people with limited time and kitchen space, enabling them to prepare wholesome meals efficiently and effectively.

Furthermore, stack cooking, Tiwari said, helps to conserve energy by utilising just one heat source to cook multiple dishes, thereby reducing overall utility costs.
