We admit, social media trends aren’t all bad—who doesn’t want beautiful, polished skin that glows to the gods? If you love wearing tube tops and strapless dresses, Barbie skin will be right up your alley. This trend to sport plastic doll-like skin, has been making rounds online, and digital creator Zoe Kim Kenealy showed us how to nail the look in an Instagram reel.

Indianexpress.com spoke to a dermatologist to find out how you can make this trend work for Indian skin and the precautions to keep in mind.

“Barbie doll skin refers to a beauty ideal characterised by a flawless, porcelain-like complexion, with a smooth, poreless texture and a luminous glow. Achieving this look involves a combination of skincare, makeup techniques, and, in some cases, cosmetic procedures,” said Dr Jyoti Gupta, dermatologist consultant at Dr Jyoti Gupta Clinic, New Delhi.

Gupta said that while the idea of Barbie doll skin is unattainable, individuals can strive for a healthy, radiant complexion through a comprehensive skincare routine. The key components include a consistent regimen focused on hydration, exfoliation, and sun protection. “Products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and antioxidants can help improve skin texture and radiance,” she said.

Gupta also said, “A skillful use of foundation, concealer, highlighter, and contouring can create the illusion of flawless skin. However, it’s important to prioritize skin health over excessive makeup.”

For more dramatic results, Gupta said, individuals may consider procedures like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments. These should be performed by qualified professionals and with caution, Gupta added.

Things to keep in mind

While pursuing a desired skin aesthetic is understandable, Gupta said it’s crucial to approach the trend with caution.

“The Barbie doll skin ideal is often unattainable and can lead to body dissatisfaction. Focusing on overall skin health and confidence is more sustainable,” she said.

According to her, excessive use of harsh products or invasive procedures can damage the skin barrier and lead to long-term issues.

Skin type, tone, and concerns vary widely and consulting with a dermatologist can provide personalised guidance. A balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management contribute significantly to skin health and overall well-being, she said.

Which skin types should be particularly careful?

Gupta said that it is important to emphasise that not all skincare products or treatments suit every skin type.

“Individuals with sensitive or acne-prone skin should exercise particular caution. Patch-testing new products and consulting with a dermatologist are recommended to avoid adverse reactions,” she said.
