Owing to environmental allergies, many people are forced to start their day with uncontrolled sneezing. While it may seem to be a pesky issue, it can be extremely daunting. So, if you are looking for a remedy, home guide Manju Mittal has one. According to her, the king of spice — black pepper powder is a “magical ingredient that works as an antioxidant in your body”.

All you have to do is drink a concoction of ¼spoonful of black pepper powder in lukewarm water every morning. “This is an easy solution for uncontrolled sneezing that many suffer from. Sip on it like a warm cup of tea,” said Mittal.

She added that black pepper powder can also help lose weight, detoxify your body, prevent cancer, and cleanse your intestines and stomach, and it consists of potassium that helps regulate heart rate and high blood pressure. “It helps in producing red blood cells, and calcium, and is also rich in vitamin B. It prevents constipation, skin deformation, and wrinkles,” shared Mittal.

So, is this claim true?

Sushma PS, chief dietitian, Jindal Naturecure Institute shared that indeed, black pepper, also known as kali mirch, has a host of health advantages, including the ability to act as an antioxidant, help with weight reduction, and prevent cancer. “Its potassium concentration helps to regulate blood pressure and pulse rate, and its detoxifying qualities can help the body by cleaning the stomach and intestines. Moreover, black pepper is high in calcium and vitamin B and contributes to the synthesis of red blood cells,” said Sushma.

Still, there’s no scientific proof to support the anecdotal evidence supporting the use of black pepper to prevent sneezes, stressed Sushma.

“The strong scent of pepper may cause some people to sneeze, although this reaction is more likely the result of personal sensitivities than a clear cause-and-effect link. While black pepper may help reduce sneezing as a reaction to allergens in the nasal passages, scientific evidence does not support this theory. All things considered, even though black pepper has several health advantages, its ability to cause sneezing has not been demonstrated,” said Sushma.

However, Dr Archana Batra, a dietician, and a certified diabetes educator shared that lukewarm water helps to dilute the pepper, making it easier to consume. “Additionally, the warmth can provide soothing relief to irritated nasal passages, further reducing the urge to sneeze,” said Dr Batra.

The key lies in pepper’s active compound, piperine, which possesses anti-inflammatory properties. “By reducing inflammation in the nasal passages, pepper can alleviate congestion and ease the urge to sneeze. Furthermore, its antibacterial properties help combat any underlying infections that might be contributing to your symptoms,” said Dr Batra.

Of course, it’s crucial to approach natural remedies with caution, especially if you have underlying health conditions or allergies. “If you’re unsure whether this remedy is suitable for you, consult with a healthcare professional or dietician before trying it,” urged Dr Batra.
