Mom-to-be Richa Chadha has been quite active throughout her pregnancy. But the Heeramandi actor, who is all set to go on a ‘self-approved’ maternity leave in a few days, recently shared that it has not been easy. In an interview with Beverly Kim White for Khaane Mein Kya Hai, Chadha opened up about her cravings. “I had weird cravings in the first trimester. One day, I woke up craving agave; I also had cravings for olive and egg yolk. Nothing in the second trimester. Now, in the third trimester, I constantly like to have something cold. It is not easy,” said Chadha, who is expecting her first child with actor-husband Ali Fazal.

The actor also shared that as opposed to 2-3 big meals, she has been having smaller, frequent meals. “It has been difficult because I just have been wanting to sleep all the time. I would knock out and sleep wherever,” shared Chadha.

But why do mothers experience ‘weird cravings’ in pregnancy?

Cravings are a major part of pregnancy. Dr Swati Gaikwad, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Pune explained that during pregnancy, women undergo various hormonal changes, which can affect their taste buds, smell, and generate the constant urge to eat a particular food. “Food cravings are sudden urges to eat a particular food or beverage, and if these cravings are not satisfied it can result in frustration and irritation. Cravings usually start to develop from the first trimester and subside around the second trimester. These cravings can sometimes go beyond expectation and lead one to eat food they hated or tried to avoid,” said Dr Gaikwad.

According to Dr Gaikwad, a craving is be the body’s way of signaling that it needs nutrients and protein found in a particular food. “There is a reason behind wanting to eat certain foods. Craving olives might indicate the body’s need for sodium as olives contain sodium, vitamins, and fat. Egg yolks are jam-packed with various nutrients, protein, and iron, making them beneficial for the pregnant woman’s overall health,” elaborated Dr Gaikwad.

What other cravings usually happen?

Pregnant women often feel like eating sour and salty food like pickles, lemons, tamarind, and salty potato chips. “It may be your body’s way of retaining fluids by replacing sodium lost during pregnancy,” said Dr Gaikwad.

What can be done

Understand your body’s needs and try satisfying them in moderation after consulting the expert. Eating well-balanced food that is packed with protein, vitamins, nutrients, and healthy fats can help fulfill your body’s nutritional needs.

“Sometimes, these cravings can be unhealthy. Find healthier alternatives to satiate these cravings. Try including crispy makhanas for the crunch, almonds, berries, avocado toast, cashews, and healthy laddoo to satisfy your taste buds. Remember not to go overboard with these cravings and eat in moderation to avoid any future complications. It is advised to consult your doctor or gynecologist before trying new cravings or food,” said Dr Gaikwad.
