Worried about the longevity of your denims? How often should you be washing your favourite pair to make sure it lasts you a good couple of years? Stylists share some of the denim ground rules they absolutely swear by.

Fashion stylist Isha Bhansali recommended washing your jeans after seven wears at the very least. “The denim fabric is durable and can go long durations without a wash. Unless the clothes have dust, dirt or stains on them, seven wears should be minimum for your pair of jeans.”

Washing them in detergent with a basic fabric conditioner is the way to go, she said.

“For ripped and acid wash jeans which are chemically treated, the principle is to make the fabric look as distressed and worn out as possible. Therefore the more washes, the better,” Bhansali said.

“Generally, three to 10 wears is recommended. This frequency helps with maintaining fabric’s integrity and colour while keeping it clean! You can also air out the jeans after wearing them to extend the time between washes. And if you’re in a city like Mumbai which is hot and humid, the recommended range would be three to five wears before washing,” said celebrity stylist Jhanvi Pallicha.

Points to note

“Washing denims less frequently definitely helps in preserving the colour and fabric. However, I would recommend turning it inside out and using cold water to maintain its appearance,” Pallicha said. She also suggested using a gentle cycle and detergent to reduce the wear and tear. Basic detergent is sufficient and effective in removing dust and odours.

Pallicha is of the opinion that fabric conditioners should be used in moderation. It can keep the denim soft and reduce static. Overuse may reduce the longevity of your jeans.

Things to avoid

“Generally you should avoid storing denims without washing them, especially if you’re planning to store them for a long time. Also, don’t place heavy items on top of your denims or use wire hangers as they can leave marks and damage the waistband,” Pallicha pointed out. She suggested using padded or wooden hangers instead.

According to her, air drying is one of the best ways to maintain the quality of denim. She recommends storing them in a cool, moisture-free environment away from direct sunlight to prevent the fading and deterioration of the fabric.
