Rohit Roy says he lost 16 kgs in 45 days with Keto diet: ‘But didn’t take much time to gain it back’

Rohit Bose Roy has been making some candid confessions on his podcast, Unstoppable — about himself and, his co-actors. In keeping with the same, he recently admitted to following the Ketogenic or Keto diet in a conversation with actor and fitness buff Bhagyashree. “I lost 16 kilos in 45 days with Keto diet. But I didn’t take much time to gain it back,” said Rohit, 55.

Taking a cue, we decided to learn more about the Keto diet, and how sustainable it is for weight loss.

What is Keto?

This diet aims to bring the body into a state of Ketosis, which is the “metabolic state where the body uses fat as its main energy source rather than carbs. To attain this metabolic state, one must drastically reduce carbs while consuming fats and moderate amounts of protein,” said Rahul Kamra, founder, Ketorets.

What does it include?

Keto emphasises a diet high in fats, moderate in proteins, and low in carbohydrates. It includes specific foods suitable for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, focusing on eliminating sugars, starches, legumes, and lentils to maintain Ketosis.

Is Keto for all?

The Ketogenic diet is suitable for individuals looking to manage conditions such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and lipids. “It’s also important to note that Ketosis is a natural metabolic state. Interestingly, newborn babies are often in Ketosis, which demonstrates the body’s innate ability to function effectively in this state. Furthermore, fasting — a practice as old as humanity — also induces ketosis, underscoring that it’s not an unfamiliar state to our physiology,” said Kamra.

Why does weight loss from Keto tend to come back?

A key challenge in the Ketogenic diet is the potential for rapid weight regain after exiting the diet. According to Kamra, this often happens if the reintroduction of carbohydrates and proteins isn’t managed meticulously. “Carbs and proteins should be reintroduced gradually to avoid a sudden spike in insulin, which can lead to insulin resistance, undoing the benefits of Ketosis. This phase, known as the Metabolic Revival Phase in the Ketorets Method, aims to establish a ‘new normal’ that aligns with sustained health and weight management goals. If one simply returns to their pre-Keto eating habits, it begs the question: why start the weight loss journey at all? The goal is not to revert but to evolve into a balanced lifestyle that maintains the advantages gained,” Kamra elaborated.

Things to keep in mind

Many people eventually give up the Ketogenic diet due to its severe carbohydrate restriction, which can be challenging to follow over time. This may lead to a reversion to previous eating patterns, such as consuming more carbohydrates, which results in weight gain.

Kamra emphasised ensuring a comprehensive intake of nutrients within the diet’s constraints is essential for overall health. “It is important to include a range of healthy fats, proteins, and low-carb vegetables in the diet, even if it emphasises a high-fat and low-carb intake,” said Kamra.

Although protein is necessary for Ketosis, too much of it might interfere with the state by converting to glucose through a process known as gluconeogenesis. “Aim for a reasonable dose of protein from foods like tofu, eggs, fish, chicken, and meat,” said Kamra.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to the Ketogenic diet; what works for one individual might not work for another. It’s critical to pay attention to your body. Seeking advice from a qualified healthcare expert can offer tailored direction and assistance.
