The use of chemicals to ripen certain fruits and vegetables has increased rampantly. As such, it has become essential to check what you are consuming is organic and chemical-free. While we have shared ways to differentiate between fake and real paneer, and also fake and real ORS, can you identify chemicals in bottle gourd or lauki? Worry not, we’re here to help you.

In an Instagram video, MasterChef Pankaj Bhadouria shared that chemicals are often used to make lauki longer and shinier. Informing that fresh stock would generally have a shorter stalk, she said: “The skin of the guards should be shiny green, not pale green. It should be tender to touch,” adding that such gourd would be raw, and comprise fewer seeds — which is ideal for cooking.

So, below is a guide from Sushma PS, chief dietitian, Jindal Naturecure Institute to identify a chemical-free lauki.

Look and texture

Look for a bottle gourd that feels substantial for its size, has a consistent colour, and hard texture. “Steer clear of those with scrapes, bruising, or soft patches since these may be signs of spoiling or chemical treatments,” said Sushma.

Scent

The aroma of a fresh bottle gourd should be earthy and gentle. “You should not buy it if you smell anything strange or strongly chemical,” said Sushma.

Organic certification

Whenever feasible, use organic bottle gourds. “Organic produce is cultivated without the use of artificial fertilisers, pesticides, or other chemicals, there is less chance of contamination,” said Sushma.

Sushma advised that one should purchase bottle gourds from respectable local farmers or shops that are well-known for their dedication to upholding safety and quality standards.

How to wash?

Wash and peel: To ensure there are no possible chemical residues on the surface, wash and peel the bottle gourd completely before eating, regardless of the source, shared Sushma.

Bottle gourds treated with chemicals can be avoided by consumers if they exercise caution and use these precautions. “Supporting organic agricultural methods also encourages the use of sustainable and healthier foods,” shared Sushma.
