In the realm of traditional remedies, turmeric, a vibrant yellow spice, reigns supreme. Often referred to as “haldi” in India, it’s been used for centuries to combat ailments and promote overall well-being. But when it comes to harnessing its power, two popular options emerge: the comforting warmth of haldi milk and the refreshing simplicity of haldi water. Both boast a range of benefits, but which one reigns supreme?

According to G Sushma, clinical dietician, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, this choice depends on your personal needs and the health benefits you’re trying to obtain from the drink.

Why haldi milk?

Sushma explained the benefits of drinking haldi milk:

– Anti-inflammatory Properties: Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Consuming haldi milk may help alleviate inflammation-related issues such as arthritis and joint pain.

– Boosts Immunity: Turmeric is rich in antioxidants and has immune-boosting properties. Drinking haldi milk regularly may strengthen the immune system, helping the body fight infections and illnesses.

– Improves Digestion: Turmeric stimulates the gallbladder to produce bile, which aids in digestion. Haldi milk can help soothe digestive issues like bloating, gas, and indigestion.

– Promotes Better Sleep: Warm milk has a calming effect, and when combined with turmeric, it can promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

– Potential Cancer Prevention: Some studies suggest that curcumin may help prevent certain types of cancer due to its anti-cancer properties.

Who should avoid it?

– Individuals with gallbladder issues: Turmeric stimulates bile production, which may exacerbate symptoms for those with gallbladder problems.

– People on blood-thinning medications: Turmeric has natural blood-thinning properties, so it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional before consuming haldi milk if you’re taking such medications.

Why haldi water?

Haldi water is simply water mixed with turmeric powder. It’s a popular beverage in Ayurveda and traditional Indian medicine. Sushma said choosing haldi water can have benefits too:

– Detoxification: Turmeric is believed to have detoxifying properties that help cleanse the liver and improve overall detoxification processes in the body.

– Weight Management: Some studies suggest that curcumin may aid in weight management by regulating metabolism and reducing inflammation.

– Skin Health: Drinking haldi water may promote clear and glowing skin due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

– Improves Digestion: Similar to haldi milk, haldi water can also aid digestion by stimulating bile production and reducing inflammation in the digestive tract.

Who should avoid it?

– Individuals with a history of kidney stones: Turmeric contains oxalates, which may contribute to kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals.

– Pregnant women: While turmeric is generally safe in small amounts, pregnant women should avoid excessive intake due to its potential uterine-stimulating effects.

Which one should you choose?

– TR, Sushma said.

– Haldi Milk: Ideal for those looking for a comforting and nourishing bedtime drink. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with inflammation-related issues, poor immunity, or sleep disturbances.

– Haldi Water: Suitable for individuals who prefer a lighter beverage or want to focus on detoxification and weight management. It’s also a good option for those who are lactose intolerant or avoiding dairy products.

Sushma recommended a serving of haldi milk or haldi water could range from 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder mixed with a cup of milk or water.
