Actor Ronit Bose Roy recently spoke about his protein intake and dislike for artificial sources like protein powders. In a conversation with his brother and actor Rohit Bose Roy, the Udaan actor, who has been a “vegetarian for a very long time” shared that his meals are always the same. “I have rajma, dal, green peas, paneer, beans, soya, mock meats, and cheese. There are only 5-6 things that I eat every day. I eat paneer every day. I am an all-time cheater,” said Ronit, when quizzed about his cheat meals.

The actor further shared that he ensures not to have any protein supplements, like powders, to meet his body’s daily requirements. He admitted that he doesn’t want his fitness-buff son Agatsya to have it, too. “I throw away the dabbas,” said Ronit, even as Rohit admitted to “sneaking in” protein powders for his nephew.

Revealing that he was a vegan for 4-5 years until he was told that he looked “sick” by his brother, Ronit shared that he went back to having products derived from milk. “I was a vegan for 4-5 years until you (Rohit) told me I looked sick. There are many reasons (for becoming a vegan/vegetarian). Now, I am a vegetarian because I believe in non-cruelty,” he said on the Unstoppable podcast.

Should you have mixed sources of protein every day?

Yes, nutritional experts do recommend having mixed sources of protein every day as part of a well-rounded and balanced diet. Proteins are composed of amino acids, some of which are considered essential because the body cannot produce them on its own. “Different protein sources contain different combinations of these amino acids, so consuming a variety of protein-rich foods helps ensure you get all the essential amino acids your body needs,” said Garima Goyal, a clinical dietitian.

However, animal-based protein sources like meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products are known as complete proteins because they contain all nine essential amino acids in sufficient quantities. “On the other hand, most plant-based protein sources like legumes, nuts, seeds, and grains are considered incomplete proteins because they lack one or more essential amino acids. However, by combining different plant-based protein sources throughout the day, you can create complementary amino acid profiles, effectively providing your body with all the essential amino acids it requires,” Goyal told indianexpress.com.

In addition to amino acids, protein-rich foods also contain various essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids, among others.

Things to keep in mind

While it’s beneficial to include mixed sources of protein in your daily diet, it’s not necessary to meticulously plan every meal to achieve this. “Instead, focus on incorporating a variety of protein-rich foods into your weekly meal rotation. For example, you can have chicken one day, tofu another day, lentils the next, and fish later in the week,” said Goyal. “By varying your protein sources regularly, you’ll naturally expose yourself to different nutrients and flavours, making your diet more enjoyable and nutritious,” she continued.

While mixed sources of protein contribute to a diverse nutrient intake, Goyal stressed that it’s essential to consider other aspects of your diet as well, such as the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats.
