Mosquitoes. Just the word itself can send shivers down your spine, especially during the hot summer months. Their itchy bites are not only annoying, but they can also transmit diseases. Here’s how to fight back and minimise those pesky bites!

Prevention is key

Dr Rahul Agarwal, Consultant Internal Medicine at CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad, emphasised the importance of prevention. Here are some effective ways to keep those mosquitoes at bay:

Natural Repellents: Opt for natural repellents like eucalyptus oil, neem oil, lavender oil, cinnamon oil, or thyme oil. These not only smell pleasant but can also be effective deterrents.

Embrace Camphor: Burning camphor is a traditional method of repelling mosquitoes. Its strong aroma deters these insects from entering your space.

Dress Strategically: Wear light-colored clothing (mosquitoes are drawn to dark colors) and opt for long pants and full-sleeved shirts to minimize exposed skin. Tightly woven, synthetic fabrics are more effective than loose-fitting, natural fabrics.

Control the Environment: Eliminate any sources of standing water around your home, such as in gutters or drains. This is a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Embrace the Net: Using mosquito nets while sleeping provides an extra layer of protection.

Vector-borne diseases, such as dengue and malaria, thrive during the monsoon due to increased humidity and proliferation of stagnant water, which create ideal breeding conditions for disease-carrying vectors, particularly mosquitoes. (Representational Image)

Light Up Wisely: Swap your white lights for yellow bulbs. Mosquitoes are less attracted to yellow light compared to the UV rays emitted by white lights.

Plant Power: Plant mosquito-repelling herbs like lavender, marigold, or basil around your home. These fragrant plants can help deter mosquitoes naturally.

Cleanliness is Key: Regularly clean your house and keep clutter to a minimum. Mosquitoes love hiding in dark, damp areas.

Staying Cool: Dr Agarwal also pointed out that staying cool can make you less attractive to mosquitoes. Warmer body temperatures and increased carbon dioxide emissions from breathing heavily can signal a feast for these biting insects.

Increased Heart Rate: While the impact is slight, an elevated heart rate can lead to more mosquito bites due to increased CO2 emissions.

Scents and Perfumes: Sweet, floral scents and strong body odors are magnets for mosquitoes. Opt for fragrance-free products or use them sparingly.

Natural repellents: A cautionary note

While natural repellents offer a safe alternative to chemical products, Dr Agarwal warned of potential downsides. The strong smell of camphor and neem combinations can irritate those with respiratory issues like asthma. It’s always best to consult a doctor before using such methods, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions.

Prevention is always the best defense against mosquito bites. By following these tips and staying informed, you can enjoy a summer with minimal buzzing and itching!
