We all know the importance of breakfast, but what we eat first thing in the morning can significantly impact our digestion and overall well-being. While some options fuel our bodies and minds, others can cause irritation and discomfort, especially on an empty stomach.

Here’s a list of foods best left for later in the day, and what to choose instead for a happy and healthy breakfast:

Spicy foods

Spicy dishes can tantalise your taste buds, but they can also wreak havoc on your digestive system when consumed on an empty stomach. The capsaicin, the compound that gives chilli peppers their heat, can trigger stomach upset and heartburn, according to Dr Lata Patil, general physician at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune. (Here’s why some of us are obsessed with eating spicy foods) Start your day with a gentler option, saving the fiery flavours for later

Coffee (black or with cream)

Coffee can be a morning ritual for many, but the acidic nature of black coffee, and the added sugar and dairy in cream-based varieties, can irritate the stomach lining on its own.

Dr Patil also recommended avoiding other acidic drinks like tea and carbonated beverages on an empty stomach, as they can worsen heartburn or gastritis.

Sugary cereals and pastries

These breakfast staples might seem satisfying, but Dr Patil suggested avoiding refined carbohydrates altogether on an empty stomach (present in these options), as they can lead to blood sugar spikes, followed by an inevitable crash later in the morning.

This can leave you feeling sluggish and hungry before lunchtime. Choose whole-grain options with protein and fiber for sustained energy.

Fried foods

Fried foods are high in fat and take longer to digest, putting a strain on your digestive system, especially when eaten first thing in the morning. This can lead to feelings of sluggishness and nausea. Choose lighter options like oatmeal or eggs for a more energising breakfast.

Fruit juice

While fruit juice seems like a healthy option, Dr Patil warned against drinking it on an empty stomach due to its detrimental effects on dental health. The acid in fruit juice can erode tooth enamel and increase the risk of cavities.

By making smarter choices about what goes into your empty stomach first thing in the morning, you can set yourself up for a day of feeling energised and focused. Prioritise easily digestible foods with protein, fibre, and healthy fats for a breakfast that nourishes your body and keeps you going.
