Popular comedian Bharti Singh is currently recovering at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai after experiencing “excruciating stomach pain.” Tests revealed gallstones, necessitating surgery, she said in a social media post.

In a heartfelt YouTube video, Singh revealed what she initially thought was bad indigestion or food poisoning turned out to be a more serious issue. Describing the pain as “unbearable”, Bharti also shared the emotional toll of being away from her two-year-old son Laksh. “No mother, who has a young child, should stay away from them or be in the hospital,” she said tearfully. Her husband, Haarsh, has been telling Laksh that his mother is away filming, she revealed, and that she longed to be reunited with him. Singh assured fans her absence is “just a matter of a few days”.

Dr Hitendra Garg, senior consultant, gastroenterology and hepatology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, shared the warning signs of gallbladder stones that one should be on the lookout for:

  • Sudden and severe pain in the upper right abdomen or epigastric region, often radiating to the back or right shoulder blade area.
  • Nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Dark or tea-coloured urine
  • Light-coloured or chalky stools

These symptoms may indicate inflammation, infection (cholecystitis), or bile-duct obstruction, which requires prompt medical attention, he said.

How gallbladder stones are different from kidney stones

Gallbladder stones are different from kidney stones in terms of location, composition, and mechanisms, explained Dr Garg.

Also called as cholelithiasis, the frequency of gallbladder stones is very common in India. More than 10 million cases per year are reported in the country. (Source: Freepik)

“Gallbladder stones form in the gallbladder or bile ducts and are primarily composed of cholesterol or pigments found in bile. Kidney stones develop in the kidneys or urinary tract and are typically made up of calcium oxalate, uric acid, or other mineral salts present in urine,” Garg explained in an interaction with indianexpress.com.

How do you take care of yourself post surgery?

Resting and avoiding strenuous activities are recommended for the few initial days, and gradually resuming normal activities as guided by the doctor. Patients should adhere to a low-fat, easily-digestible diet initially, and gradually reintroduce other foods, Dr Garg said, adding that staying well-hydrated and avoiding alcohol until you’re fully recovered is essential.

It is very important to note that monitoring and addressing any concerns or complications post surgery is important. Any concerning symptoms, such as persistent pain, fever, or jaundice needs to be taken care of to ensure smooth recovery.
