News about celebrities, from their workouts to their fashion mantra, always creates a buzz among fans as they give us an insight into their likes and dislikes. As such, when we stumbled upon a throwback YouTube video of Zero actor Anushka Sharma opening up about her love for this dish, we wanted to know more. And trust us, (at one point in time) she used to have this every single day. Yes!

“Every day; I am not even joking. Every single day, I eat idli, chutney, and sambar for breakfast. I think fermented food for breakfast is really easy on the stomach,” Anushka said in a snippet shared by @wireStudio.

What are fermented foods?

Fermented foods, which include idli, dosa, kombucha, and kimchi, are produced by culturing ingredients, often over days or weeks. This process helps break down the organic molecules in the food through enzyme activity. According to experts, fermented food helps the gut bacteria as it is a natural source of probiotics. For the unversed, our gut houses 100 trillion bacteria and the balance of good and bad bacteria determines how our gut impacts the rest of our body.

What makes them healthy?

Dt Rashi Tantia, HOD, dietetics, Metro Hospital, Faridabad said fermented foods offer numerous benefits, especially when consumed on an empty stomach. “Firstly, they are easy to digest, which means they are gentle on the stomach and can be quickly absorbed, providing a source of energy without causing discomfort,” said Tantia.

Additionally, fermented foods are rich in antioxidants, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties, which boost the immune system and promote overall health. “Moreover, fermented foods have a low glycemic load, making them suitable for individuals with diabetes as they do not cause spikes in blood sugar levels. Furthermore, their low-fat content makes them a safe choice for those with cardiac concerns,” noted Tantia.

What should one keep in mind?

While incorporating fermented foods into your diet can be beneficial, it’s essential to consider moderation. They offer numerous health benefits but consuming them excessively may not be necessary or beneficial for everyone. It’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate frequency and portion size based on individual dietary needs and health goals,” said Tantia.
