Have you ever wished you could hit a mute button on the world, or yourself, for a day? Speech fasting, the practice of intentionally refraining from speaking for a set period, might be the answer you’ve been looking for.

Dr Shaunak Ajinkya, Consultant- Psychiatrist, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai, helped us dive into the potential benefits of this age-old practice for both your physical and mental health.

What are the benefits of speech fasting?

Reduced Stress and Vocal Strain: Speech fasting allows your vocal cords to rest, reducing strain and fatigue, especially beneficial for those who rely heavily on their voice professionally. This vocal rest can also lead to a decrease in stress hormones like cortisol, promoting relaxation and better sleep.

Enhanced Mindfulness and Communication: By quieting the external chatter, speech fasting can lead to greater self-awareness and introspection. You might find yourself listening more attentively to others, improving your overall communication skills.

Spiritual Connection: Speech fasting holds significance in many religions and spiritual practices, like Buddhism, as a way to connect with your inner self or a higher power.

What happens to your body during a day of silence?

A full day of speech fasting can bring about some noticeable changes, said Dr Ajinkya:

Physical Relaxation: Your vocal cords, throat muscles, and even facial muscles experience a welcome rest. Deeper breathing becomes more natural, promoting relaxation and potentially lowering blood pressure and heart rate.

Mental Clarity: With fewer distractions, your mind may feel sharper and more focused. You might also become more attuned to nonverbal cues, both in yourself and others. Completing a day of speech fasting can also boost your sense of accomplishment.

Who Should Avoid Speech Fasting?

While speech fasting can be beneficial for many, it’s not for everyone. Dr Ajinkya advised caution for those with certain conditions:

Vocal Cord Disorders or Respiratory Issues: Speech fasting can worsen symptoms for those already experiencing vocal cord problems or breathing difficulties.

Mental Health Concerns: Individuals with conditions like anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder might experience a worsening of symptoms due to social withdrawal or isolation.

Speech fasting can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and frustrations in relationships, especially if those around you aren’t aware of your intentions. Finding alternative ways to communicate, like writing or using nonverbal cues, might be necessary in some situations.

So, will you give speech fasting a try? Consider your individual circumstances and consult with a doctor, if needed.
