Did you know 37-year-old entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath — co-founder of Zerodha, India’s largest retail stock-broking platform, with brother Nithin Kamath — dropped out of school when he was 14? To play chess, full-time.

Recently, Kamath’s mother Revathi recounted how she would encourage her children to play chess. While academics held significance, she also recognised the enriching potential of extracurricular pursuits, notably chess.

In a televised interview, she recalled her father’s wisdom, “My father told me playing chess makes your mind sharp.” She encouraged her sons to immerse themselves in the strategic intricacies of the game from a tender age, starting as early as four years old, to enhance their mental acuity.

Media interviews frequently mention Nikhil’s youth spent playing chess, crediting this pastime’s mental rigor for his achievements. However, it must be noted that Kamath was once found cheating in a charity chess match against former world champion Vishwanathan Anand.
