Holi’s vibrant colours bring joy, but can also leave your skin feeling dull and irritated. Don’t worry, a glowing complexion is still within reach!  But worry not, as we shall help you unveil a treasure trove of DIY skincare tips for Holi, using natural ingredients readily available in your kitchen.

From gentle pre-Holi prep to soothing post-colour removal strategies, discover how to pamper your skin and emerge from the festivities with a radiant, healthy face. Dr Swapna Priya, consultant dermatologist, CARE Hospitals, HiTec City, Hyderabad, emphasised the importance of taking care of your skin, both before and after Holi celebrations.

“Preparing your skin beforehand can help minimise the damage caused by these chemicals and make it easier to remove the colours later,” advised Priya.

3 DIY remedies to can try before Holi

Priya recommended using these 3 DIY remedies pre-Holi.

Moisturising Mask

Create a moisturizing mask using ingredients like honey, yoghurt, and aloe vera gel. Honey acts as a natural humectant, locking in moisture, while yoghurt soothes the skin and aloe vera helps to calm any irritation. Mix equal parts of honey, yoghurt, and aloe vera gel to form a smooth paste. Apply this mask to your face and other exposed areas of the skin for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.

Oil Massage

Before stepping out to play Holi, give yourself a gentle oil massage using coconut oil or olive oil. Massage the oil into your skin, focusing on areas that are likely to come in contact with colours, such as your face, arms, and neck. Oil forms a protective layer on the skin, preventing the colours from seeping deep into the pores. It also makes it easier to wash off the colours later.

Barrier Cream

Create a barrier cream using a mixture of petroleum jelly or a thick moisturiser and zinc oxide powder. Zinc oxide acts as a physical barrier, protecting the skin from the harmful effects of colors. Mix equal parts of petroleum jelly or moisturizer with zinc oxide powder to form a thick paste. Apply this cream to your face and other exposed areas of the skin, focusing on areas where colors tend to stick, such as around the nails and hairline.

3 DIY remedies to try after Holi

After playing Holi, it’s essential to take care of your skin to remove any remaining colour and soothe any irritation or dryness, said Priya, recommending three DIY remedies you can try post-Holi:

Milk and Turmeric Paste

Make a paste using raw milk and turmeric powder. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, while milk helps to cleanse and nourish the skin. Mix enough turmeric powder into raw milk to form a thick paste. Apply this paste to your skin and leave it on for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. This remedy will help remove stubborn colours and soothe irritated skin.

Cucumber and Rose Water Toner

Create a soothing toner using cucumber juice and rose water. Cucumber has cooling properties, while rose water helps to tone and hydrate the skin. Blend a cucumber to extract its juice and mix it with an equal amount of rose water. Store this mixture in a spray bottle and spray it onto your skin whenever it feels irritated or dry. This toner will help refresh your skin and restore its natural pH balance.

Multani Mitti (Fuller’s Earth) Mask

Make a rejuvenating face mask using multani mitti, rose water, and a few drops of lemon juice. Multani mitti helps to absorb excess oil and impurities from the skin, while rose water and lemon juice help to brighten and refresh the complexion. Mix enough multani mitti with rose water and lemon juice to form a smooth paste. Apply this mask to your face and leave it on for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. This mask will help remove any remaining colour and leave your skin feeling clean and refreshed.
