Excerpts:

Q. What has been keeping you busy?

Yasmin Karachiwala: My days are busy and exciting. I spend a lot of time working with clients, creating special workouts for them, and taking workshops. I ensure to keep learning and staying updated with what’s new in the fitness world. Amid all the madness around my work, I try my best to take care of myself. I personally believe in balance, so I carve out time for my own health and happiness.

Q. Do you think the adoption of Pilates is growing, and why?

Karachiwala: Yes, the adoption is growing. It works from the inside out; it focuses on your core. It is a powerful form of exercise that, due to its emphasis on strengthening the body, improving flexibility, and promoting overall awareness, enhances both physical and mental well-being. Through mindful breathing techniques, it foster a mind-body connection, aiding in stress reduction and mental clarity. Whether you’re a homemaker or a corporate professional, Pilates can improve your posture and overall movement, serving as a remedy for correcting forward neck and rounded shoulder posture. It is accessible to nearly anyone, making it a go-to choice for improving both physical well-being and overall flexibility.

Q. What makes Pilates a favourite with many celebrities?

Karachiwala: Each exercise has its own benefits and will help you build your upper body muscles. For me, Pilates is an important part of my exercise regime. It’s a great workout that combines strength with stretch. It’s a super safe exercise form and makes your body stronger from the inside. Celebrities love it because it helps them stay in shape while they’re busy filming or dancing. It straightens your body and makes your core stronger. Just like any other exercise it also needs one to follow a balanced diet – which includes healthy foods like almond milk, fruit juices, yogurt, and vegetables. All these items have high nutritional value.

Q. What is your diet mantra?

Karachiwala: To perform well, your body needs good fuel, which means eating the right foods. My diet philosophy is all about eating whole foods that nourish both body and mind. I focus on healthy eating by avoiding processed and fried foods as much as possible. I eat lots of vegetables, fruits, and nuts like almonds. Almonds have been a part of my diet since I was a kid, and I always recommend sticking to the eating habits you grew up with. They’re satisfying, help with weight loss, and are convenient for busy workdays. With these healthy habits, I keep my life balanced and consistent. It is essential to listen to our hunger cues and eat when we feel hungry rather than following strict meal timings. I also emphasise the importance of staying hydrated by consuming ample water throughout the day. This balance and moderation make small yet impactful changes to my diet. This approach helps to build a healthy relationship with food and helps prevent binge eating and emotional eating.

Q. You train with so many people including celebrities. What’s your mantra for a rewarding fitness journey?

Karachiwala: I have been in the fitness business for more than a decade now. And after all the years I’ve spent training them, one thing that stands out is their unwavering dedication and commitment to their goal. There’s no one in specific, I would say that most of the celebrities that I train are committed to their fitness journey. Regardless of their hectic schedules, they prioritise their workouts, determining a level of discipline and consistency. I can’t specify one person given everyone is equally dedicated and committed to their workout regime. They are all extremely disciplined.

They approach each session with enthusiasm and purpose, always striving to push their limits and achieve their goals. Their dedication extends beyond the gym, as they also prioritise healthy lifestyle choices and maintain a positive mindset.

Q. How do you ensure that you keep innovating in Pilates?

Karachiwala: Being innovative is key to my work. To keep growing and bringing new ideas, I make sure to keep learning about movement science. This means staying updated on the newest methods and trends in Pilates and similar areas. This allows me to stay abreast of the latest techniques, trends, and advancements in Pilates and related disciplines. I also regularly collaborate with industry professionals, exchange ideas, and seek feedback from my clients to adapt and evolve my approach. By staying curious and open to new ideas, I aim to keep getting better at what I do and keep delivering the best possible results on the ground.

Q. Your top three ways to keep fit and why?

Karachiwala: Nutrition – Every day, I make sure to eat a variety of healthy foods to keep my body running well. Eating right helps me feel energised and helps my muscles recover after exercise. I suggest eating foods that are full of good stuff like protein, carbs, and healthy fats, along with lots of fruits and veggies.

Functional Training – I also practice squats, lunges, pushes, and pulls to focus on my everyday fitness regimen. Functional training not only builds muscle but also improves overall functionality, making it easier for me to perform daily tasks with ease and efficiency.

Pilates – I practice Pilates as it is all about strengthening the core muscles, improving flexibility, and fixing your posture. It’s great for making the body more aligned and preventing injuries. Plus, it helps to build my lean muscles. The controlled movements and breathing techniques involved also help me feel more connected with my body.

Q. Tips for beginners who are looking to try Pilates.

Karachiwala: For beginners trying Pilates, start by finding a qualified instructor to guide you through the primary levels of movements and principles. Focus and consistency are important, focus on mastering proper forms to avoid injuries.

Begin with beginner-friendly Pilates mat exercises before progressing to more advanced equipment-based workouts.

Don’t be afraid to modify movements to suit your fitness level.
