In her maiden speech in Parliament, New Zealand’s youngest Member of Parliament (MP) Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke performed the traditional ‘Māori haka’ or ‘war cry’. Her speech, which was delivered in December last year, has gone viral on social media now.

The performance was part of the speech that Maipi-Clarke delivered, wherein she is stated to have made a promise to her electorate — “I will die for you … but I will also live for you,” as per New Zealand Herald.

‘Māori haka’ is a ceremonial war dance of the native Māori community in New Zealand. It was also performed traditionally to welcome distinguished guests, or to acknowledge great achievements, occasions, or funerals.

The 21-year-old MP was elected to Parliament in October 2022. She had defeated the incumbent Nanaia Mahuta, who represented the Hauraki-Waikato seat since 2008.

Maipi-Clarke doesn’t see herself as politician, but as a guardian of Maori language, according to The Guardian.
