Hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in the United States on his three-day visit, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan emphasised that India should bolster its support for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly in light of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

His comments come ahead of PM Modi’s bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden at Biden’s residence in Wilmington, Delaware, on the sidelines of the sixth Quad Leaders Summit.

Sullivan refrained from detailing Biden’s remarks on the sensitive topics expected to arise in their discussions. He asserted, “The United States has been clear about our view that Russia’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine flouted every norm and principle of international law,” urging countries like India to take a stand on these principles.

He further stated that “every country everywhere should refrain from supplying inputs to Russia’s war machine.”

Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine will also be a significant focus of their meeting. Sullivan described it as an important and historic trip, providing an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss their perspectives on the situation.

In the context of the conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently noted that India is among three countries with which he maintains regular contact regarding the Ukraine crisis, acknowledging their sincere efforts to address it.

Additionally, Sullivan mentioned that Biden and Modi will discuss China’s actions in the region, covering security, economic, and technological aspects, as they aim to coordinate their approaches in a way that benefits both nations.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the leaders will review the progress made by the Quad over the past year and set a roadmap for future cooperation, particularly in helping the Indo-Pacific region meet its development aspirations.
