The United Nations called on countries with influence over Israel and Hezbollah on Friday to act immediately to prevent further escalation in the Middle East. The plea came after attacks, reportedly by Israel, resulted in the deaths of 37 people and injured thousands, following explosions targeting Hezbollah’s communication devices.

UN political affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo, addressing the Security Council, warned that the violence could escalate beyond what has already been witnessed. “We risk seeing a conflagration that could dwarf even the devastation and suffering witnessed so far,” DiCarlo said, urging member states to intervene.

Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib condemned the attacks, accusing Israel of violating Lebanon’s sovereignty. He called for the Security Council to hold Israel accountable, displaying images of the destruction caused.

In response, Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon stated that while Israel does not seek wider conflict, it would act to defend its borders if Hezbollah does not withdraw. Israel’s airstrike in Beirut on Friday killed a senior Hezbollah commander, heightening tensions.

Iran, a key backer of Hezbollah, warned of serious repercussions from Israel’s actions. Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani highlighted Iran’s “maximum restraint” but expressed concern over Israel’s activities in the region.

The United States, an ally of Israel, urged all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and avoid actions that could lead to further conflict. UN human rights chief Volker Turk called for an independent investigation into the attacks, emphasizing the need for accountability.
