The US Secret Service has confirmed it is aware of a post made by billionaire Elon Musk on social media X, where he questioned the lack of assassination attempts on President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk posted the comment after a man was arrested for allegedly planning to assassinate Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach.

Musk, a supporter of Trump and CEO of Tesla, wrote: “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala,” ending the post with a raised eyebrow emoji. The post quickly sparked backlash from users across the political spectrum, who expressed concern that Musk’s comment could encourage violence against the president and vice president.

Well, one lesson I’ve learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on 𝕏

Musk later deleted the post, but the Secret Service took note of the situation. A spokesperson said the agency investigates all threats against its protectees, though they declined to say if they had contacted Musk.

In follow-up posts, Musk suggested the comment was meant as a joke, saying, “Turns out that jokes are WAY less funny if people don’t know the context.”

The White House condemned Musk’s comment, with spokesperson Andrew Bates calling it “irresponsible rhetoric” and stressing that violence should never be encouraged or joked about. Both Biden and Harris also condemned political violence in their statements following the arrest of the man suspected of targeting Trump.
