Floods hit central Europe: Four dead in Romania as heavy rains continue

At least four people have died, and thousands of homes were damaged in Romania after severe floods hit central and eastern Europe. Several countries are on alert after days of heavy rain caused rivers to overflow, with more rain expected. Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic are among the countries facing serious flooding.

Romania’s floods claim lives

Romania has been hit hard, with flooding affecting eight counties. In the Galati region, where four people were killed, around 5,000 homes were damaged, and 25,000 households lost power. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu visited the area and assured people that the government is doing everything possible to help.

Television footage showed flooded streets filled with muddy water and debris, as rescue workers helped evacuate residents. “Saving lives is our top priority right now,” Ciolacu said.

Czech Republic faces power outages and evacuations

In the Czech Republic, the northern and northeastern areas have been badly affected by the floods. Around 51,000 homes are without electricity, and officials warned that some areas could see even more heavy rainfall. People in high-risk areas have been told to be ready to leave their homes if needed.

In the capital, Prague, flood barriers have been set up along the Vltava River to protect the city. After the devastating floods in 2002, Prague invested in better flood protection, but officials remain cautious. The city’s zoo has been closed, and many train routes have been disrupted.

Poland prepares for a critical night

In Poland, the town of Glucholazy near the Czech border is struggling with rising water levels. Firefighters have placed hundreds of sandbags to prevent further flooding, and some residents have been evacuated. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said, “We are facing a critical night, and we need full effort from everyone.”

Austria and Slovakia get ready for more floods

Austria is preparing for more rain, with emergency services coordinating evacuation plans. Chancellor Karl Nehammer said the situation is getting worse, especially in Lower Austria, and the next few days will be difficult for both residents and emergency teams.

In Slovakia, the Danube River is rising and could cause flooding in the capital, Bratislava. Hungary is also on high alert, expecting the river to reach near-record levels.

As heavy rain continues across central Europe, rescue efforts are focused on protecting people and minimizing further damage.
