Model Bella Hadid has long expressed support for the Palestinian people and has done so once again on Instagram.

The 27-year-old is the daughter of Palestinian-Jordanian real estate mogul Mohamed Hadid and Dutch former model Yolanda Hadid. Mohamed Hadid was born in Nazareth during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. His family fled their home when he was a baby, becoming refugees in Syria and settling in the U.S. when he was a teenager. Bella Hadid claims ancestry from Zahir al-Umar, the mid-18th-century monarch of northern Palestine, through her father.

The successful model— who Time magazine named as one of the 100 most influential people on its annual list in 2023—says she has previously lost work and relationships when sharing her support for Palestinians.

On October 7, Hamas led a surprise attack on Israel, which it said was retribution for worsening conditions for Palestinians under Israeli occupation. Israel declared war on Hamas and launched hundreds of airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, followed by a ground invasion. At least 1,200 people were killed in Israel, the Associated Press has reported, and more than 17,700 Palestinians have been killed, according to health authorities in Gaza, the AP says.

Now Bella Hadid has posted a picture to her grid of the word "Palestine" with three love hearts, with the text in the colors of the Palestinian flag. People have taken to the comment section to show their support for Bella Hadid and thank her for speaking out publicly.

Newsweek reached out to a representative for Bella Hadid via email Monday.

"Bella, you are suitable to be America's president and if you are America's president, maybe the world will be safe without another war," one person wrote.

"My salute to u for supporting Palestine 🇵🇸! CeasefirenowFreePalestine," said another.

A third added: "We love you Bella."

However, not everyone is supportive of her post, with one person writing: "Bruh its over. Things change. Imagine if Mexico tried taking back Texas and Cali? Move on fr. Senseless killing over land 🙄 Arabs literally are all over."

Another added: "An Argentine Hostage who was taken by Hamas and looks completely healthy was executed today with 2 more young men."

Following this, the model posted an image to her Instagram story sharing information about a benefit concert, with profits going to Gaza and Sudan. "Love you @mustafathepoet so proud," she wrote, tagging the event organizer.

Bella Hadid first broke her silence on the war on Instagram on October 27, telling followers that she had refrained from commenting until she could adequately describe her thoughts on the matter.

"Forgive me for my silence," she wrote. "I have yet to find the ideal words for this deeply intricate and horrific past 2 weeks, weeks that have turned the world's attention back towards a situation that has been taking innocent lives and affecting families for decades."

The 27-year-old runway star described the conflict as "generational trauma" for Palestinians and expressed sympathy for victims on both sides of the war.

"Harming women and children and inflicting terror does not and should not do any good for the Free Palestine movement," she said.

"I believe deep in my heart that no child, no people anywhere, should be taken away from their family either temporarily or indefinitely. That goes for Israeli or Palestinian people alike."

Explaining that she'd received hundreds of death threats and that her phone number had been leaked as a result of her previous support for Palestinians, Bella Hadid said: "It is important to understand the hardship of what it is to be Palestinian, in a world that sees us as nothing more than terrorists resisting peace."

"It is harmful, it is shameful, and it is categorically untrue," she continued. "There is an urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza that must be attended to. Wars have laws—and they must be upheld, no matter what."

This year isn't the first time that Bella Hadid has shown her support for Palestinian people. Back during Eid in 2020, Bella posted a greeting to her Muslim followers on Instagram, and announced that she would be making donations to charities that support refugees and those who have witnessed conflict, including children in Palestine, Suria, Iraq and Lebanon.

In May 2021 she also attended a pro-Palestinian protest in New York City and subsequently, she and her sister Gigi Hadid, along with singer Dua Lipa, were the focus of a controversial advertisement in the New York Times.

Placed by the World Values Network, an organization that says it teaches and explores "traditional Jewish values," the ad linked the stars to Hamas with the caption: "Hamas calls for a second Holocaust. Condemn them now."

Bella Hadid's appearance at the march led to calls for Dior to drop her from its campaigns, which the brand ignored.

The model's pro-Palestinian stance has lost her modeling jobs and brand partnerships in the past, as well as friendships, which she revealed during an appearance on journalist Noor Tagouri's Rep podcast in August 2022.

"I had so many companies that stopped working with me," she said. "I have friends that completely dropped me."
