Selena Gomez found herself in hot water this week after she made a statement on the Israel-Hamas war that people immediately compared to a far stronger one she made previously about the war in Ukraine.

Hamas on October 7 launched the deadliest Palestinian militant attack on Israel in history. Israel then launched a war on the Islamist group in the Gaza Strip, with extensive air and ground assaults. As of October 31, at least 1,400 people have been killed in Israel, the Associated Press reported, while more than 8,500 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The 31-year-old actor and beauty mogul shared a post on her Instagram Stories on October 30, outlining her decision to remain silent on the issue.

She said her "heart breaks to see all of the horror, hate, violence and terror that's going on in the world," which resulted in her taking a social media break amid the conflict.

"People being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any group is horrific," the Only Murders in the Building star's statement read. "We need to protect all people, especially children, and stop the violence for good.

"I'm sorry if my words will never be enough for everyone or a hashtag. I just can't stand by innocent people [getting] hurt. That's what makes me sick."

She concluded: "I wish I could change the world, but a post won't."

The actor later shared another post to her Stories that read: "I'm taking a break and deleting my Instagram. I'm done. I do not support any of what's going on."

Newsweek reached out to a Gomez representative for comment via email on Friday.

The statement stirred controversy online, with people taking issue with the fact that she said she couldn't change anything. Fans pointed out the considerable reach her platform offers, as Gomez is currently the most followed woman on Instagram, with 410 million followers, and 66.6 million followers on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In response, some have called for people to boycott Gomez's beauty brand, Rare Beauty.

Others said they feel like the 31-year-old is being hypocritical, pointing out the fact that she previously utilized her platform to highlight the crisis in Ukraine, condemning Russia's attacks and publicly announcing that she was donating aid.

People have been reminding her that she has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2009, of which her role is described on the website as "advocating for the world's most vulnerable children."

Many have taken to X to express their issue with Gomez choosing not to speak out.

"She is always the victim. Lol, I could actually believe her words but suddenly I remember how concerned she was about the Ukrainian War. Shame on you Selena. Stay kind silence [sic] as always," one person wrote.

selena gomez using her privilege to “log off” social media in a time of crisis when she had no issue getting involved during the russia/ukraine war. says “i wish i could change the world” when she literally has contact with the president/vp of a country supporting that genocide,

"Friendly reminder that Selena Gomez dropped links for Ukraine in a heartbeat, but the kind sensitive girl choosing to log off social media because she doesn't want to see violence," said another.

A third added: "I love you very much @selenagomez but centering yourself as a victim in the middle of a genocide is unbelievably tone-deaf. Sometimes listening to constructive criticism leads to growth—your fans are disappointed and hoping for dialogue. Please engage instead of shutting down."

However, some of Gomez's loyal fans have offered their support to the singer.

"You guys don't deserve this woman, her grandmother is hospitalized, she has her own problems and she just try [sic] to be responsible while everyone wants her to pick a side from a war that she doesn't understand, you forget all the donations, help and good things she's always done," one person wrote.

"I love Selena Gomez, and yes I'm glad she's deleting Instagram y'all so toxic my girl doesn't deserve that bad energy," someone else commented.

Another added: "It breaks my heart because she loves us so f***ing much and you are paying her back like this? She honestly doesn't deserve us 😢😭😭🥺 I hope she's ok."
