Hollywood actor John Cusack has lashed out at former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley after photos emerged of her writing a message on Israeli artillery shells amid the country's ongoing war with Hamas.

Division remains over the U.S. response to the latest Israel-Hamas war, which followed the Palestinian militant group's surprise attack against Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking an estimated 250 hostage. Israel later launched its heaviest-ever airstrikes in Gaza. More than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The rising death toll has led to international calls for a ceasefire and multiple protests at universities across America.

On Monday, Haley, the former South Carolina governor who also served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under former President Donald Trump, visited Israel where she met with survivors of Hamas' attack.

Haley traveled to Israel's northern border with a member of the Israeli Knesset, Danny Danon, who posted photos on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday showing Haley signing her name to the artillery shells, along with the message: "Finish Them!" She added: "America [loves] Israel" to the shells.

"This is what my friend, the former ambassador, Nikki Haley wrote today about a shell during a visit to an artillery post on the northern border," Danon wrote in Hebrew according to Google Translate.

Weighing in on the matter, screen star Cusack, who has spoken out in defense of Palestinians and criticized Israel's strikes, took to X to slam Haley's actions in a post that quickly went viral on the micro-blogging platform.

"Anyone who signs a f****** bomb should be put in a mental institution—For the criminally insane," the actor's post read.

As of press time, the post has garnered more than 3 million views. Newsweek has contacted representatives of Haley and Cusack via email for comment.

Cusack continued to slam Haley in a series of other posts, as he stated that the politician "certainly cannot understand normal thinking."

"Burning children alive - Finish them - she hissed," he wrote about Haley.

Responding to an X user's criticism of Haley's artillery shell written comments, Cusack also said that "besides it's shocking inhumanity [it] was revolting in some weird gaslighting uncanny way. He added that it was "[multi] dimensions of disgusting."

Ramping up his attacks, Cusack wrote in reaction to a photo of Haley: "She needs a nice list of her true qualities. She who writes 'finish them' with a big [heart emoji] like a psychotic teenage serial killer."

He branded her a "ghoul—groveling, spineless, heartless, vicious, brutal, malicious, barbarous, brutal, callous, cruel, despotic, inhuman, sadistic, savage piece of s***."

The backlash over the photo comes as Haley called on the U.S. government to continue providing military aid to the Israeli government to support its war against Hamas, telling reporters during her visit that the United States "needs to do whatever Israel needs and stop telling them how to fight this war."

"If you think this will only be in Israel, if we are arrogant enough, this could absolutely happen in America too and this is the moral of this story," Haley further stated during her visit.

Haley took to X to share her own photos of her visit as she described the October 7 attack and placed the blame for the current war squarely on Hamas.

"Israel did not start this war—Hamas did," she wrote. "Families in southern Israel woke on October 7, as 3,000 Hamas fighters brutalized Israelis. Thousands of Palestinian civilians followed joining in the destruction, looting, and violence."

"On a Jewish day of prayer, savages burned their cars so they could not escape, set their homes on fire as they hid in their safe rooms, shot families as they tried to flee, and separated children from their parents to hold hostage," she continued.

"When Hamas promises they will do it again, Israel should believe them. Israel must do whatever is necessary to protect her people from evil. Americans must remember that when Iran and Hamas chant 'Death to Israel' they also promise 'Death to America.' Israel is fighting America's enemies."

Earlier in May, it was announced that the International Criminal Court is seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

The ICC's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, confirmed to CNN's Christiane Amanpour that the court is seeking warrants on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity surrounding the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Sinwar is facing action over the October 7 attacks on southern Israel, while Netanyahu is sought for arrest regarding Israel's strikes on Gaza. The warrants mark the first time the ICC has targeted the leader of a U.S. ally.
