India trounce England by an innings and 64 runs, win series 4-1

A clinical India thumped England by an innings and 64 runs to win the fifth match of the series at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in Dharmsala on Saturday.

India win the series 4-1.

Ravichandran Ashwin ( 5 for 77) joins spin legends Muttiah Muralidaran, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble as the only bowlers to bag a five-wicket haul in their 100th Test. He was ably-supported by Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 38), Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 40) and Ravindra Jadeja (1 for 25).

Earlier, India could add only four runs to their overnight score to end with 477 in response to England’s 218.

The visitors took less than 20 minutes to wrap up India’s innings with veteran James Anderson finally getting to the 700-wicket mark.

Young off-spinner Shoaib Bashir had Jasprit Bumrah stumped for his second five-wicket haul of his debut series. It was his second five-wicket haul in four tests, and he became the first England bowler to achieve the feat before turning 21.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma did not take the field in England’s second innings because of a stiff back. Vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah took charge, sharing the new ball with Ravichandran Ashwin.

Ashwin bowled Ben Duckett (2) in the second over, and then dismissed Zak Crawley for a 16-ball duck in the sixth over. Ollie Pope tried a sweep shot, but only ended up offering an easy catch to Yashasvi Jaiswal at short leg as Ashwin picked a third wicket. Pope made 19 runs and England was down to 36-3.

Jonny Bairstow, appearing in his 100th test, and Joe Root added 56 runs for the fourth wicket. Bairstow was aggressive, hitting three fours and three sixes in his 31-ball, 39-run total.

But Yadav provided the breakthrough, trapping Bairstow lbw, as England lost a fourth wicket leading up to lunch. It got worse as Ashwin bowled skipper Ben Stokes for just two runs leaving the English second innings in tatters.

Ashwin was not done as he cleaned up Ben Foakes. Then it was time of Jasprit Bumrah, who with his inch-perfect yorkers removed Tom Hartley and Mark Wood.

The 48-run stand between Joe Root and Shoaib Bashir for the ninth wicket showed some resistance, before Jadeja broke the partnership.

Root was the last man to get out after he was caught at long-off by Jasprit Bumrah off Kuldeep’s bowling. Root top-scored with a fine 84.
