Stop defending the indefensible: Geoffrey Boycott asks Rohit Sharma supporters after ‘past his best’ comments

English legend Geoffrey Boycott who a few days ago had said that Rohit Sharma is nearly 37 and past his best, on Saturday reiterated the comment saying that the supporters of the Indian captain should stop defending the indefensible.

The 83-year-old, however, said that Rohit was still a good batter but still good nobody gets better after age 36, adding that the Indian has to use his experience to combat his age.

“Supporters of Rohit stop defending the indefensible he’s been a super batsman & still good but nobody gets better after age 36, we all decline in fitness reactions speed of thought endurance etc. doesn’t mean he can’t make runs but has to use all his experience to combat his age,” Boycott said on X, formerly Twitter.

In the last few years, Rohit has been consistent and has given India a good start at the top. However, did not much of an impact in the first Test in Hyderabad which the hosts lost by 28 runs against England.

In the second Test in Vizag, Rohit scored just 14 off 41 deliveries in the 1st innings, failing to get a good score once again. In the second innings, he was in he middle, batting at 13 at Stumps on Day 2.

“Their captain Rohit Sharma is nearly 37 and past his best. He makes pretty cameos but has scored only two Test hundreds at home in four years,” Boycott had written in his column for The Telegraph. The Indian opener made 545 runs from eight matches in 2023 at an average of 41.92 with a ton against Australia in Nagpur.

Rohit also has had a poor series against South Africa recently. In two matches in the series, on spicy pitches, the batter could only manage 60 runs at an average of 20.

“This India team are ripe for the taking and England has a golden chance to be the first side to topple them on their own patch for 12 years. India badly miss Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja has a hamstring injury and will not play the second Test,” Boycott would say before the second Test.
