The FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 match between world champion Ding Liren and the teenaged challenger from India, D Gukesh, will be held at Resorts World Sentosa, which is a resort on the island of Sentosa, located off the southern coast of Singapore.

The organisers also announced that the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 match — which will feature two contestants from Asia for the first time in 138 years — will be held from November 23 to December 15.

India’s D Gukesh became the youngest ever player in history to qualify for the FIDE World Chess Championship match when he won the Candidates tournament earlier this year. China’s Ding Liren has been the World Champion since defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi in the World Chess Championship match last year.

If India’s D Gukesh manages to beat Ding Liren at the World Chess Championship in November-December, he will become the youngest world champion in history.

Singapore had beaten the twin Indian cities of New Delhi and Chennai to emerge victorious in the race to host the World Chess Championship.

What to expect at World Chess Championship?

Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore’s first integrated resort, will offer a distinctive blend of leisure and entertainment options, where players, officials, and fans alike can look forward to having a memorable experience, the oganisers said.

“This partnership preserves the prestige of the FIDE World Chess Championship while introducing an element of modernity and excitement – visitors can enjoy the luxury of having many attractions a stone’s throw away from the match venue to complement the existing suite of ancillary chess events,” said Kevin Goh, SCF CEO and Chair of the Local Organising Committee for the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024.

The organisers of the FIDE World Championship 2024 also noted that in conjunction with the match between Gukesh and Ding Liren, there will be a top-level open tournament held within minutes of the playing hall of the World Chess Championship match.

Organised by the Singapore Chess Federation (SCF), the Singapore International Open will feature competitors from all over the world.

“It’s amazing that I will not only be able to witness the World Championship match up close but also compete in a strong international tournament in my own country,” local grandmaster Siddharth Jagadeesh, who at 17 is Singapore’s youngest ever grandmaster, was quoted as saying on the release by the local organisers.

Tickets for the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 Match will go on sale soon.
