While his team desperately tried to stave off their shock defeat to NZ Warriors at the NRL 'Magic Round', young Penrith Panthers half Jack Cole had problems of his own - namely, keeping down his lunch.

In the final moments of the 22-20 Warriors win at Brisbane, Cole, 20, was absolutely nailed in a tackle from centre Adam Pompey that sent him crashing backwards into the Suncorp Stadium turf, actually dislodging the ball from his grasp.

As the Warriors players appealed vigorously for a knockon and a chance to close out the game, Cole was still trying to compose himself with the eyes of the world on him.

Ultimately, he failed, evoking a collective groan from the crowd, as he threw up on field - displayed on the big screen - as Penrith fullback Dylan Edwards lined up a penalty kick at goal to force 'Golden Point'.

Perhaps distracted by his teammate's misfortune, Edwards left his kick wide right, allowing the Warriors to snap their four-game losing streak, despite a myriad of injuries that left them with a very makeshift line-up on the field.

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary - who guided the Warriors to a Grand Final appearance in 2011 - was not impressed with his team's performance.

"We didn't play well enough," he offered. "Just a collection of lots of things..."

Could he elaborate? "Not really."

Captain Isaah Yeo was more forthcoming, after his spell in the sin bin allowed the Warriors back into the contest with two tries.

"We were hard on ourselves, just stupidity," he admitted. "Just a bad judgment call early in that second half, when we already weren't at our best... that was poor leadership.

"It was an accumulation of things, which seemed to happen in different areas. Individually and collectively, we just weren't good enough today."

The Warriors took the field without many of their veteran stars, including captain Tohu Harris, halves Shaun Johnson, Luke Metcalf and Chanel Harris-Tavita, second-rowers Kurt Capewell and Marata Niukore, hooker Freddy Lussick, centres Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Rocco Berry, and then lost hooker Wayde Egan to concussion early.
