The IPL 2024 season has announced an unbridled rush of uncapped players taking the stage by storm with record-breaking performances. The past week marked the arrival of fresh talent and a return to form for some of the league’s veterans.

April 4: GT v PBKS

Punjab’s Shashank Redemption

6 – Punjab Kings made a stunning come-from-behind win in a 200-run chase against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, with Shashank Singh’s unbeaten 61 from 29 balls taking the team over the line with a ball to spare.

Punjab thereby surpassed Mumbai Indians for the most successful 200-plus run chases in IPL history with their sixth such effort.

Abhishek blitz at 300

308.33 – Abhishek Sharma’s turbocharged 37 off 12 deliveries was the highest score by a Sunrisers Hyderabad batter with a 300-plus strike rate. The left-hander also became only the third opener after Chris Gayle (twice) and KL Rahul to record 300-plus strike rate in innings (min. 30 runs).

April 6: RR v RCB

Kohli’s record 8th IPL ton

Virat Kohli divided the cricketing world with his 67-ball hundred in Jaipur – the joint-slowest IPL hundred in 17 editions. Kohli’s century, however, was a record-extending 8th IPL hundred and 9th T20 ton. Only Chris Gayle (22) and Babar Azam (11) have registered more centuries in the T20 format.

517 – Kohli has registered three tons in his last seven innings in the IPL, recording the best streak of runs in seven consecutive innings in the league by any batter.

With his 8th ton for RCB, Kohli also went past Michael Klinger (7 for Gloucestershire) for most centuries for a single team in T20s. RCB also became the team with the most individual hundreds (18), breaking the tie with the Indian national team (17).

110 – Kohli also surpassed Suresh Raina for the most catches in IPL history.

100/100 for Buttler

6 – Jos Buttler smashed his sixth IPL hundred, levelling with Gayle for the second-most centuries in the IPL. Buttler became the second player after KL Rahul to score a hundred in their 100th IPL appearance. Buttler also joined Kohli and Ben Stokes as the only batters to have multiple IPL centuries while chasing.

April 7: MI v DC

Mumbai rampage in the record books

Mumbai Indians smashed their highest total at the Wankhede Stadium, a whopping 234/5 against Delhi Capitals.

Mumbai’s total was the highest T20 team score ever without an individual fifty (highest: 49 – Rohit Sharma).

Romario smash

Romario Shepherd smashed 32 runs off the 20th over by Anrich Nortje – the most by an MI batter in an over. Shepherd finished unbeaten on 39 off 10 deliveries, with a strike rate of 390.00 – the highest ever in IPL history (min. 10 balls faced).

24.46: Shepherd and Tim David shared a staggering 53-run stand for the sixth wicket in only 11 deliveries with a 24.46 run rate – the highest for any 50-plus stand in the IPL.

150 for MI, 150 for Bumrah

Mumbai Indians became the first T20 team in the world to record 150 wins while also becoming the first IPL team to win 50 matches at a single venue (Wankhede Stadium). Meanwhile, pace ace Jasprit Bumrah reached 150 wickets in the IPL, becoming only the third bowler after Lasith Malinga and Sunil Narine to scale the mark for a single team.

April 7: LSG v GT

Siddharth’s unending over

LSG left-arm spinner M. Siddharth became the first spinner to concede three no-balls in an IPL over that extended to nine deliveries – the longest ever by a spinner.

April 8: CSK v KKR

Jadeja: All-round superstar

Ravindra Jadeja became the first player in the IPL to record the triple of 1000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches during CSK’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai. Jadeja is only the fifth fielder to reach the 100-catch milestone in the IPL behind Suresh Raina, Kohli, Kieron Pollard and Rohit Sharma.

April 9, SRH v PBKS

Bhuvneshwar ends eight-year wait

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Heinrich Klaasen combined to stump PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan in what was the first stumping dismissal off a pacer in the IPL in eight years. Bhuvneshwar is the only seamer to record two dismissals by stumpings, the previous instance coming in 2013 against Manvinder Bisla.

Nitish tops with bat and ball

Nitish Kumar Reddy became the second youngest batter to record an IPL fifty for SRH, with his 64 off 37 balls paving the way for an eventual 2-run win. Aged 20, Nitish also became the youngest player to score a half-century and pick up a wicket (1/33) in a match.

April 10: RR v GT

Rashid, the death-overs phenom

Rashid Khan pulled off a thrilling last-ball win for Gujarat in a 197-run chase after scoring 24 off 11 deliveries against RR, walking in at number 8. Interestingly, Rashid has the highest batting strike rate (221.97) in the death overs since the 2022 season (min. 200 runs).

Rashid also has the best economy rate (8.33) for a spinner in the death overs since 2022 and is one of only two spinners alongside Yuzvendra Chahal with 10-plus wickets in the phase in this period.
