New Zealand golfer Ryan Fox has made a sizzling start to the US Masters, powering to a one-stroke lead after his first 12 holes in Augusta.

Rain delayed the start of the year's first major tournament by more than two hours but Fox wasted little time making his mark on Friday morning (NZ time), shooting birdies on each of his first three holes.

He held a share of the lead until the par-five eighth hole when his long game helped him to an eagle, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard.

With much of the field still to tee off, Fox sat one clear of American Bryson DeChambeau.

It represents a remarkable reversal of form for 37-year-old Fox, whose world ranking has dropped to 54th in recent weeks following a string of modest returns on the US PGA Tour.
