We often experience seasonal issues like the common cold, cough, and sore throat as the weather changes. While popping a tablet or drinking cough syrup is preferred, many also route to home-based herbal remedies that are said to provide instant relief. So, when we came across an Instagram post suggesting a dash of lemon juice and honey helps relieve a sore throat, we decided to turn towards experts.

When lemon is combined with honey and consumed with sore throat, the antioxidant nature of both of them gives perfect relief, said dietitian Simrat Bhui. “Honey has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and many therapeutic roles in respiratory diseases,” said Bhui.

Dr Srikanth H S (assistant chief medical officer), Jindal Naturecure Institute said that lemon’s acidic nature can aid in breaking down mucous and combating infections.

Bhui added that one can also add a little black pepper to it. “This will give instant relief to pain, swelling, and soreness,” said Bhui.

Dr Srikanth said that the moistening effect of this mix helps alleviate dryness and irritation in the throat, contributing to overall relief. “The lemon and honey remedy is generally safe for all age groups, except for infants and toddlers, due to the risk of botulism associated with honey. Diluting lemon juice with water for children and adding a small amount of honey can make the mixture more palatable,” said Dr Srikanth.

Dr Deepti Sinha, lead consultant, Dept of ENT, CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi said that having fresh ginger juice mixed with lemon juice and honey makes a more powerful home cure for sore throats for every age group, including children. “Honey’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities soothe the sore throat lining, and lemon‘s vitamin C concentration boosts immunity and facilitates the breakdown of mucus. The essential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of fresh ginger increase the efficacy of the treatment,” said Dr Sinha.

How to make it?

A healthy mixture can be made by boiling a small piece of fresh ginger in 200 ml of water, a spoonful of honey, and a few drops of fresh lemon juice. “Using fresh ingredients instead of OCT (Over-the-Counter) soup packets guarantees a higher concentration of active substances, that can enhance the potential advantages of the cure,” said Dr Sinha.

What to keep in mind?

As mentioned above, it’s crucial to note that honey should not be given to children under the age of one due to the risk of infant botulism. People who are allergic to any of these components should also proceed with caution. “This natural cure might provide relief, but it’s always advisable to see a doctor if symptoms are severe or chronic,” said Dr Sinha.

Individuals with citrus allergies should exercise caution; alternative remedies may be more suitable. “If the sore throat persists or worsens, especially in children, seeking medical advice is paramount. These natural remedies serve as supportive measures and should not replace professional medical guidance,” said Dr Srikanth.
