What is Cushing’s Syndrome that actor Amy Schumer has been diagnosed with?

Actor Amy Schumer recently revealed that she has been diagnosed with Cushing’s Syndrome, which occurs when the body has elevated levels of cortisol (the body’s primary stress hormone). It is said to affect people on steroids.

“There are a few types of Cushing. Some that can be fatal, require brain surgery or removal of adrenal glands,” the comedian and actor told the News Not Noise newsletter. “I have the kind of Cushing that will just work itself out and I’m healthy (which) was the greatest news imaginable,” added Schumer.

What’s the syndrome all about?

Dr Puneet Bhuwania, consultant nephrologist and transplant physician at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road described Cushing’s syndrome as a complex and rare condition caused by prolonged exposure to high levels of cortisol in the body. “This hormone, produced by the adrenal glands, plays a key role in regulating metabolism and immune function. However, excessive cortisol can lead to a range of symptoms such as weight gain, muscle weakness, and mood swings.”

One pertinent aspect of Cushing’s syndrome is its diverse range of causes from tumours in the pituitary or adrenal glands to external factors like certain medications. “While the physical symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome are often noticeable, its psychological impact is equally significant. Patients may experience cognitive impairments, memory problems, and even depression or anxiety. The challenges faced by individuals with this condition extend beyond the physical realm, highlighting the importance of holistic care and support systems,” said Bhuwania.

Treatment options for Cushing’s syndrome vary depending on the underlying cause. According to Dr Bhuwania, in some cases, surgery may be required to remove tumours causing excessive cortisol production. “Other treatment approaches include medication to suppress cortisol production or radiation therapy for certain types of tumours. Patients with Cushing’s syndrome need to work closely with their healthcare providers to develop a personalised treatment plan that addresses their specific needs and concerns,” he said.
