Ever experience the frustration of a chipped nail, right before a big event? It’s not just a cosmetic concern! Brittle nails can be frustrating and even painful.

But fear not, Dr Sushma Yadav, dermatologist, cosmetologist, hair transplant surgeon, and founder of Skinology Centre in Bangalore, shares the secrets to keeping your nails strong and healthy.

Why do nails break?

There are several culprits behind weak, brittle nails, according to Dr Yadav.

External aggressors: Constant hand washing, harsh chemicals, and even excessive moisture can dry out nails, making them more susceptible to breakage.

Age is a factor: As we age, nail production slows down, leading to drier, weaker nails.

Underlying health issues: Certain medical conditions like thyroid problems, skin diseases, and nutritional deficiencies can impact nail health.

Beauty treatments gone wrong: Frequent gel manicures, nail art, and harsh polishes can weaken your nails.

The Strength Squad: Your Nail Care Arsenal

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to fight back. Dr Yadav recommended these:

  • Protect your digits: Wear gloves when handling cleaning products and avoid exposing your hands to excessive water.
  • Give gels and artificial nails a break: These treatments can damage your natural nails over time.
  • Fuel your nails from within: A balanced diet rich in protein and biotin helps build strong keratin, the key component of nails.
  • Kick the nail-biting habit: This weakens and damages your nails.
  • Maintain a neat trim: Regularly trim and file your nails to prevent snags and breakage.
  • Hydration is key: Choose moisturisers and conditioners without alcohol to keep your nails hydrated.
  • Strengthening polishes: Opt for polishes with nylon fibers, which can add a protective layer and prevent chipping.
  • Ditch the acetone: Acetone-based removers are harsh on nails. Use gentler remover options.
  • Nail slugging for the win: Coat your nails with petroleum jelly overnight for an intense moisture boost.
  • Soak in oil: Consider soaking your nails in olive oil or lukewarm water with a few drops of essential oil for extra nourishment.
  • No stress: Manage stress, as it can impact nail health.

While home care usually suffices, consult a doctor if you experience the following, said Dr Yadav.

  • Swelling or redness around your nails
  • Bleeding or pus
  • Severe nail changes

Strong, healthy nails are achievable! By implementing these tips and addressing any underlying issues, you can confidently say goodbye to brittle nails and hello to beautiful, healthy tips!
