Dealing with dandruff can be pretty annoying, right? But guess what – there’s a natural mix that might help: camphor and coconut oil, according to blogger Deepti Kapoor. Let’s break it down for you, with help from dermatologists.

The blogger shared that a mix of pure powdered camphor (kapur) and coconut oil applied half an hour before shampoo can be effective against dandruff.

What is dandruff?

Dandruff is a skin condition brought on by an excessive amount of oil and a naturally occurring fungus. Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics said that it causes irritation and is visible in the form of tiny white flakes.

Dr Mittal pointed out that there are sebaceous glands all over your scalp that secrete oil. “The largest organ in the body, your skin, depends on this for their correct functioning. However, it’s a warning indication if your skin starts to get oily for whatever reason. Because this activates the fungus Malassezia Globosa, which feeds on this oil and grows,” explained Dr Mittal.

“You must address the underlying causes of dandruff if you wish to use camphor for it,” said Dr Jatin Mittal, co-founder, cosmetologist, and skin expert from Abhivrit Aesthetics, New Delhi.

Does the combination of camphor and coconut oil work?

Camphor has cooling properties. “It’s like a superhero that fights inflammation and germs. For dandruff, it can help soothe your scalp and keep those nasty fungus guys in check,” said Dr Rinky.

Dr Mittal too shared that due to camphor’s anti-fungal properties, using it for dandruff may make sense. “It may mitigate the fungus growth that causes dandruff while lowering irritation and swelling. Additionally, as your blood circulation increases, nutrients may be sent to your scalp, aiding in the process overall. For this reason, some people decide to utilise camphor as a dandruff removal method,” said Dr Mittal.

You’ve probably heard about coconut oil doing wonders for hair. Well, it’s true! “Coconut oil is like a good moisturiser that can reach deep into your hair. It also fights germs, and helps with dry scalps but remember not to apply for long hours if you have dandruff,” said Dr Rinky.

However, Dr Mittal noted that the effectiveness of coconut oil and camphor mix for dandruff is still inconclusive. “If you have dandruff and severely dry skin, this might be the best option for you. People with seborrhoeic dermatitis may become much more irritated when oils are applied to their scalp,” said Dr Mittal.

Before you go all-in, it’s smart to test this mixture on a small spot, just to make sure your skin is adaptive to it. “While this camphor and coconut oil mix could be your secret weapon against dandruff, everyone’s hair is different,” said Dr Rinky.

Experts urge that before starting treatment, explore the underlying cause of your dandruff with your doctor. “You’ll be able to choose the appropriate things, like coconut oil, in this way. If, despite using it multiple times, you still don’t observe any improvements, you should also visit your dermatologist,” said Dr Mittal.
