It’s not uncommon to crave a slice of chocolate cake or a bucketload of fries right before your period starts. In fact, there are legitimate reasons why hunger cravings strike around your menstrual cycle — you can blame it on your hormones. A 2016 study published in the FASEB Journal shows that changes in levels of estrogen and progesterone lead to cravings for high-carb and sweet foods before your period. However, instead of succumbing to these unhealthy snacks, why not opt for nutritional foods that satisfy your period cravings while supporting your overall health?

Recently, nutritionist Apurwa Agarwal took to Instagram to share a few recipes you can turn to during your periods.

“Are you someone who faces challenging periods? Do you also experience digestive issues like constipation, bloating, gas, and acidity? Throw in the fact that you have these unhealthy cravings during your period, and your digestive system further takes a hit,” Agarwal said in the post. “Well, there are some delicious and nutritious food options that are going to take care of your cravings and improve your gut health as well,” she added.

  1. Choco Bliss Bites

To satisfy your sweet tooth, Agarwal recommends these Choco bliss bites. “They are packed with dates and a plethora of essential nutrients that are great for your digestion, muscle function, and overall health,” she explained.

  1. Makhana Bhel

If you are someone who craves spicy snacks during periods, Agarwal suggests trying your hand at this Makhana Bhel. “It is full of nutrients, flavourful, and crunchy. Makhanas, also known as foxnuts, are low in calories and high in fibre. They aid digestion and keep you full for a long time,” she said.

Ingredients:

  • Makhana
  • Onion
  • Tomato
  • Spices as per taste
  • Crushed pumpkin seeds (optional)
  • Crushed almonds (optional)

Steps:

  1. Take some makhanas. Mix them with sliced onions and tomatoes.
  2. Add spices of your choice to the mixture.
  3. Garnish with crushed pumpkin seeds and almonds on top to make it crunchier.

Your flavourful snack is ready to munch on!

“You can now control your period cravings without compromising your digestive health. Stay happy, healthy, and satisfied!” Agarwal concluded.
