In the quest for radiant skin, collagen has emerged as a buzzword in the beauty and wellness industry. As the most abundant protein in the human body, collagen plays a crucial role in maintaining skin elasticity, hydration, and firmness. From skincare products to dietary supplements, collagen has become a sought-after ingredient promising to rejuvenate and revitalise aging skin. But what if we told you can increase your collagen production naturally without resorting to artificial means? Recently, nutritionist Leema Mahajan took to Instagram to share a collagen-rich drink that will boost your skin health.

Mahajan suggested making a bowl of bone broth by “simmering animal (chicken/mutton/beans/fish) bones in water and a small amount of vinegar (to help dissolve the bone and release collagen and minerals)” for around 4 to 24 hours.

According to the nutritionist, this protein and mineral-rich drink not only works on improving skin elasticity but also strengthens hair, improves gut health, repairs joints, and enhances the skin’s appearance as well. She advises drinking this at least two times a week to achieve the best results.

Agreeing, Ruchika Jain, chief clinical nutritionist, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, told indianexpress.com that “when you simmer bones, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues in water for an extended period of time, collagen is released into the broth.” “This collagen-rich broth, commonly known as bone broth, can offer benefits such as joint health, skin elasticity, and overall connective tissues health,” she added.

However, Jain noted that the amount of collagen and its specific benefits may vary depending on factors such as the sources of the bones, the cooking time, and the overall quality of the broth.

Apart from bone broth, there are several other natural sources of collagen, Shabana Parveen, clinical nutritionist, Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, said. “Fish, especially the ones that have edible bones like salmon and sardines, egg whites, gelatin that is derived from collagen-rich animal parts, dairy products like cheese and yogurt, fruits, and vegetables like citrus fruits, leafy veggies, and berries are rich sources of collagen,” she added.

It’s essential to note that while collagen can provide several benefits for the skin, its effectiveness can vary from person to person. “A healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, adequate hydration, and proper skincare habits is crucial for overall skin health,” Jain concluded.
