‘Spend five minutes on your skin every day, you will find that it looks revived, healthy’: Author and skin expert Vasudha Rai

To cut through the noise and so-called skincare trends, Vasudha Rai, author, and columnist, decided to write a book called The Book of Holistic Beauty, which has been adapted as an audiobook on Audible. The Audible Original goes beyond surface-level beauty concerns, addressing trending topics such as injectables, derma facials, and DIY skincare. In a digital age where misinformation is rampant on social media, the author aims to debunk misconceptions, addressing key concerns plaguing the beauty industry.

“I wanted women to have a ready recycler of sorts when it came to beauty. Additionally, I find that the beauty industry has become very binary. It’s chemical vs natural or DIY vs dermatologist. The truth however is that there is no black and white, right or wrong. Everything works in the right amount and excess of anything is bad. This book helps you find what the approach that suits you best, and how to balance natural remedies with skincare-backed skincare,” said Rai in an email interview with indianexpress.com.

The Delhi-based author who started her writing journey with her first book Glow in 2018 talks about the biggest skincare myths, the skin needs of men, and more.

Excerpts:

What are some of the myths related to skincare that you would like to bust through this book?

That we need injectables. Or even derma facials for that matter. Yes, I do enjoy derma facials once in a while but I have found that the best transformation happens when you regularly and consistently take care of your skin. Of course, no one talks about consistency because it isn’t a hack but if you show up and spend five minutes on your skin every day, you will find that it looks revived and healthy.

Is there one skincare that works for all?

Regarding skincare products, it is a no, because we are all unique. However, I will say that adding a mindful activity such as breath work makes a difference in everyone’s skin. And this isn’t some snake oil technique. Now there are enough studies to show that mindful activities lead to a reduction of conditions such as eczema and psoriasis and also help maintain the length of our telogens, which indicate cellular ageing.

How important is skincare for men?

Oh, that’s extremely important! I have a chunk of men who follow me and DM regularly for skincare tips. You’ll be surprised to know that one of the things that bothers men most is dark circles.

How was your experience of working on the audiobook?

It was excellent. I am always up for trying something new and the fact that I recorded the book in my own voice was a huge learning experience. Speaking in a way that is crystal clear and engaging is hard work. In fact, during the days I was recording, I barely went out or spoke over the phone because I wanted to give my voice the rest so it would sound fresh the next day. I was also working with two young sound engineers (Vivek and Kritikka) and it was a pleasure learning from young people and understanding the nuances that I would’ve never considered otherwise.

I had a great editor who was always available for a chat and that was very helpful because an audiobook is a whole different concept to a book that is read. Together we went through a couple of concepts before settling on this one.

What’s next?

More books of course, hopefully one before Diwali, if I finish writing it in time.
