Can hot water, ginger, clove, and lemon help kickstart your weight loss journey? Experts weigh in

Social media reels and recipes tend to catch our attention more often than not. The most common topic is weight loss remedies. As such, when we caught a glimpse of blogger Deepti Kapoor promising a weight loss drink with lemon, ginger, clove, and hot water, we decided to turn to experts.

Kapoor shared that a tablespoon of lemon, half of ginger, and 2-3 cloves in hot water taken every night can be effective for weight loss, along with other dietary changes.

How to make it?

In hot water, add lemon, 2-3 cloves and ginger.
Allow it to steep.
Drink every night.

Does it work?

While these ingredients can be part of a healthy lifestyle, weight loss is best achieved through a combination of a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and overall healthy habits, experts urge.

“Hot water boiled with ginger, clove, and lemon can aid in jumpstarting the weight loss journey, but it’s not a magic solution on its own. Each ingredient plays a role in enhancing metabolism, digestion, and reducing appetite,” said Dt. Deepika Jayaswal, consultant dietitian and nutritionist, Motherhood Hospitals, Sarjapur, Bengaluru.

Ginger: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger may aid digestion and boost metabolism. However, its impact on weight loss might be modest, said Dr Dilip Gude, senior consultant physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Clove: Cloves contain compounds that may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, but their role in weight loss is not well-established.

Lemon: Lemon is often touted for its vitamin C content and potential metabolism-boosting effects. Some people include lemon in their weight loss routines, primarily as part of a healthy diet.

Hot water: Drinking hot water may help increase feelings of fullness and improve overall hydration. It’s a common practice in various weight loss regimens.

While the combination of these ingredients can complement your efforts by promoting healthy metabolism and aiding digestion, it’s not a replacement for a balanced diet, sustainable habits, and exercise routine.

Lemon, ginger, and cloves, while each has its distinct health benefits, the combination and weight loss claims may not have evidence basis, said Dr Gude. “There may be modest or minimal weight loss with these components taken as tea. Calorie restriction, exercise, low carb, low fat, high protein(plant-based) and high fibre still are the pillars of weight loss,” said Dr Gude.

Jayaswal added that the excess of these can irritate sensitive stomachs and may cause some side effects.
