Does makeup harm your skin? It’s more complex than you think

There has been an ongoing debate about the effects of makeup on our skin. Some argue that wearing makeup daily can clog pores, cause breakouts, and even accelerate ageing, while others claim that modern formulations are safe and good for your skin. It is time we separate fact from fiction on this contentious topic.

Recently, Dr Rashmi Shetty, a celebrity dermatologist, shared makeup dos and don’ts on The Ranveer Show with podcaster and host Ranveer Allahbadia. When asked whether makeup harms the skin, Dr Shetty noted that what harms the skin is the applicator.

“Most people don’t clean their sponges well. And then they say, ‘Oh, I cleaned it,’ which means that they have washed it with a little soap. The bacteria will be sitting inside the sponge. And that wet sponge, you will be using it the next morning. This is again bad. So, using disposable sponges is better,” she said.

Dr Shetty added that “Brushes are an absolute no,” too. “I always tell my artists that for ₹300 you get a whole box of disposable triangle sponges. For blending makeup on your face, please don’t use a brush because the bristles can harm your skin quite a lot. Even if it is soft, it can transfer the infection quite badly.”

She further advised caution. “I am assuming everybody is using great makeup. Tubes have to be clean. Close it well. Keep it clean. Cake makeup should not be kept open. Now and then, you check the expiry date and throw the makeup away, no matter how favourite the makeup is. So, these are generally cautious things. Use a good brand. Don’t leave makeup on your face for a long time. Wash it off. If you do all of this well, makeup is enjoyable.”

To avoid these problems, Dr Chytra Anand, dermatologist and founder, SkinQ and Kosmoderma Clinics told indianexpress.com that using high-quality makeup that won’t clog your pores, cleaning your skin well, and following good makeup habits, is essential.

Tips to keep your skin healthy while applying makeup

According to Dr Seema Oberoi Lall, consultant-dermatology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram:

1. Understand your skin type: Whether it’s oily, dry, combination, or sensitive, selecting makeup tailored to your skin’s needs is essential. For oily skin, opt for water-based or powder-based products to control excess shine. Conversely, individuals with dry skin should lean towards oil-based formulas to provide hydration.

2. Moderation is key: Allowing your skin to breathe occasionally is beneficial. Consider opting for minimal makeup, focusing on lip and eye enhancements, while giving your skin a break. Remember to always cleanse your face before bed, particularly after activities like workouts or outdoor exposure to prevent clogged pores and potential allergies.

3. Pay attention to the hygiene of your makeup tools and products: Avoid sharing brushes and regularly clean sponges and brushes to minimise bacterial buildup. Keep an eye on product expiry dates, especially for items like lipsticks and eyeliners, as sensitive areas like the lips and eyes are prone to reactions. Replace products every three to six months to prevent bacterial contamination, particularly during warmer months.

4. Special caution for sensitive and acne-prone skin: Opt for minimalistic makeup options. Tinted sunscreens or BB creams with micronised oxide and iron oxide provide coverage without clogging pores or exacerbating skin issues.
