Embarking on the journey to marital bliss is undoubtedly one of life’s most exhilarating adventures. However, the path leading up to the big day often comes with its fair share of stress and butterflies. From intricate wedding planning to the anticipation of a life-changing commitment, the pre-wedding period can be overwhelming. Fear not, though, as we delve into the art of gracefully handling the stress that precedes your wedding day.

According to Dr Mazher Ali, consultant-psychiatry, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, a lot of this stress can be attributed to the immense expectations, both internal and external. “The anticipation of creating a perfect day can lead to stress as the couple strives to meet societal, familial, and personal ideals.”

Some other factors can add to your stress if you’re a bride or groom-to-be, explained Dr Ali.

Logistical complexity: Planning a wedding involves navigating a myriad of details such as choosing venues, selecting catering, managing guest lists, and coordinating various services. The logistical intricacies of these tasks can become overwhelming for the couple.

Financial pressure: The costs associated with weddings can be exorbitant, and the financial burden may contribute significantly to stress. Couples might feel compelled to adhere to societal norms and meet expectations, leading to strained finances.

Family dynamics: Family expectations and dynamics can add an additional layer of stress. Conflicting preferences, disagreements, or familial pressures to adhere to traditions can create tension for the couple.

Time constraints: Planning a wedding is a time-consuming process. Couples often find themselves balancing wedding preparations with other responsibilities, adding time constraints and increasing stress.

Emotional intensity: Weddings are emotionally charged events with profound significance. The emotional weight of the occasion, coupled with the anticipation of a major life transition, can contribute to heightened stress levels.

Perfectionist tendencies: The pursuit of perfection in every aspect of the wedding can lead to stress when things deviate from the meticulously planned vision. Perfectionist tendencies may amplify stress levels.

Here’s how you can deal with pre-wedding stress

Effective communication: Foster open and honest communication with your partner. Discuss expectations, concerns, and priorities to ensure you are on the same page throughout the planning process.

Delegation of responsibilities: Avoid taking on the entire wedding planning process by yourself. Delegate tasks to trusted friends, family members, or consider hiring a wedding planner to share the workload.

Realistic expectations: Acknowledge that not everything will go exactly as planned, and that’s perfectly normal. Set realistic expectations, focusing on the aspects of the wedding that hold the most significance for you as a couple.

• Scheduled breaks: Incorporate breaks into your planning schedule to relax and spend quality time together. Avoid burnout by ensuring you take moments to rejuvenate amidst the hustle and bustle.

Budget management: Establish a realistic budget and stick to it. Proper budgeting can alleviate financial stress and prevent overspending during the wedding preparations.

Prioritise self-care: Pay attention to your physical and mental well-being. Incorporate regular exercise, ensure adequate sleep, and practice mindfulness techniques to manage stress effectively.

Focus on the relationship: Amidst the wedding preparations, remember the core reason for the celebration—the commitment you share as a couple. Keep the focus on your relationship and the love that brings you together.
