It is all about enjoying the process than just concentrating on the results. While the results do matter, the process or the journey makes it even more worthwhile. That sums up what Shefali Shah has been trying to say with her fitness post inspiring us all the more. The actor admitted that she “hated exercising”.

“This was a new year resolution, from the new year of 1993 till 2023. Finally, I did start in 2023 and end with @pranay_meher03 my amazing trainer. I dunno if I’ll ever be thin (thin as the world sees it) but I feel really good and honestly I really enjoy it. Try it. Take it from someone who hated exercising,” said the Three of Us actor.

The post had some poignant comments from her fans and followers. One wrote, “Being thin is not important.. it’s your performance that we love”, while another shared, “Kicking off the fitness journey with a bang! You and your trainer are showcasing that the real victory lies in enjoying the process. Warm wishes on behalf of the Kosha Team”

“Consistency is the magic ma’am, trust me 6-8 months of even mild physical exercise but 5 days a week, and you will see a transformation that would last years, but don’t give up in a few months,” another advised.

Is fitness all about ‘being thin as the world sees it’?

Here’s where body fat percentage matters. According to Bala Krishna Reddy Dabbedi, a fitness expert and co-founder and director at Fittr, body fat percentage is one of the key indicators of an individual’s health condition. “A high body fat percentage may put one at a higher risk of lifestyle diseases. A body fat percentage of 15 or lower is recommended for males, while a body fat percentage of 25 or lower is recommended for females,” said Dabbedi in an interaction with indianexpress.com.

How to measure Body Fat percentage:
– Online calculators (One of such calculator is on Fittr App – body fat calculator)
– Skinfold calipers
– Go for a DEXA or BCA (Body Composition Analysis)

There are two different types of fat in the body subcutaneous fat which can be easily seen and visceral fat which is deeply located and also present in and around the internal organs of the body. It is the visceral fat that has detrimental effects on the health, apprised Dabbedi.

While, it is interesting to note that weight is the sum of fat, muscle, blood, water and our organs, fat loss refers to weight loss from fat, and it’s a more specific and healthful goal than weight loss.

Losing muscle can be detrimental, as muscle is a crucial component of your overall health and muscles help us gain/retain enough functional strength. “Scientific evidence has shown that maintaining a healthy percentage of muscle has several benefits, such as regulating healthy blood sugar levels, having a control on PCOS/PCOD, and helping in staying away from common lifestyle disorders. While your goal is to lose weight, prioritise fat loss over just weight loss,” said Dabbedi.
