Coconut water, which is the clear fluid found inside coconuts, is an ideal drink for all seasons. It is not only a healthy beverage, but its slightly sweet and nutty flavour makes it delicious as well. Low in sugar and calories, the drink is rich in electrolytes such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium, which help replenish lost nutrients. But, did you know it also serves as an ideal post-workout drink?

In her series of #Tuesdaytips with Bhagyashree, the actor shared why coconut water is better than sugary drinks after a good workout session in the gym. “Coconut water is more hydrating and a superior alternative to sports drinks post workouts. Not all things fancy and expensive are better,” she said.

Bhagyashree added that one can have this simple drink and cut down on calories too. “It increases your electrolytes and aids in faster recovery. High in potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus, it gives your body the nutrients much needed after a workout,” she continued.

Along similar lines, Sushma PS, chief dietitian, Jindal Naturecure Institute, Bangalore said that it’s crucial to replace fluids and electrolytes lost through perspiration after an exercise. “While sugary beverages do include water, they also frequently have poor electrolyte levels and high sugar content. Consuming excessive amounts of sugar may make it more difficult to hydrate. On the other hand, drinking coconut water before exercise lowers the risk of being dehydrated, and doing so afterward is a great method to recuperate and restore electrolytes naturally. It also helps muscles rejuvenate after exercise, which is important for enhancing and maintaining endurance,” she said.

Coconut water is generally considered safe for all, however, the expert noted that some people may be allergic to coconuts or have allergic reactions when exposed to coconut water. “Additionally, coconut water has natural sugars and a lower glycaemic index, but people with diabetes or those who constantly check their blood sugar levels need to be careful about how much carbohydrates they consume overall, including sugars present in coconut water.”

Concluding, the dietitian said, “If you have kidney issues, before consuming coconut water consult your doctor. It is not advised for those with high blood pressure due to its high sodium content, which may cause the pressure to rise even higher.”
